X1 Gen 9 w ext monitor - Auto dimming/screen black out

2021-05-11, 4:16 AM

Brand new X1 Carbon Gen 9 with Processor: 11th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 Processor (2.40 GHz)

I have it hooked up to a monitor via HMDI with USB Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. The computer auto-dims within 15 seconds of no movement and then goes dark with a black screensaver moments after. I’ve tried just about everything I’ve found through the forums.

Turned off Display Power Savings via the Intel app and it remains disabled after restart. I’ve changed power settings to 1 hour until sleep/shut down. Screen saver is also set to none.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Related thread I found is: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Win10-Pro-Adaptive-Brightness/m-p/4395245?page=1#5219997. They claimed it was fixed by disabling Microsoft ACPI under device manager but that doesn’t seem sustainable.

I made an account just to reply to your question; I have the same machine and had the same problem. This drove me mad until I figured out the solution.

This is actually a feature to prevent people from snooping on your monitor.

Go to:

  1. Commercial Vantage
  2. Device
  3. Smart Assist
  4. Disable Zero Touch Lock

This problem won't actually occur when the laptop lid is open, and you're in proximity of the human presence sensor. However, when the lid is closed or far away from your face, this feature activates.

Anyways, I hope this helps. Enjoy your new machine :)

Hi Bink0,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Check if the computer is allowed to shut down the device to save power:

Step 1. Allow to Shut down Device to save Power.
- Right click the "Windows Icon" in the bottom left corner and select "Device Manager" from the list
- Navigate and drop down "Display" on the list.
- Right click the Display in question and select properties.

- Navigate to "Power Management" (if available) in the tab overview.
- Un-check  "Allow the computer to shut down this device to save power"

Also check if the Monitor itself has some settings that might cause it to go into standby mode.

Step 2. Try setting "Turn off Display" to never in Power settings.

Step 3. System Board and Display Driver updates

Make sure you have the newest BIOS, Chipset and Display drivers for your device:
You can find and install the newest drivers from the Lenovo Support Page
Just plot in the serial number of the device, click the search icon and select your device, then head to Drivers & Software, select Manual Update, then select the BIOS, Chipset or GPU/Display/Video Graphics section for their respective drivers.
Right click the files in question and select "Run as Administrator".
**Note: Make sure the AC adapter is connected and that you have at least 30% battery charge when performing BIOS updates. Do not turn off the device while the BIOS update is running as this can cause serious damage to the motherboard and prevent the device from functioning properly or at all.

Regards

Voithos

Thanks Viothos.  I don't have "Display" on the device manager.  There is Display Adapters but it did not have the options you provided.

I think the way I fixed it was disabling Senor Monitoring Service through Services.  It hasn't dimmed since but I just want to make sure this won't affect other areas of the device.  Any input?

I love features like this that make me have to manage more bios settings.
