Lenovo X1 Yoga 4th Gen - External monitor no longer works

2019-12-24, 17:02 PM

As of today or yesterday night I can my laptop cannot connect to my external LG monitor.

It used to work since I bought it a couple of months ago

I am running on win10

Things I have tried

-- Connected the monitor with the same cable to another laptop --> it works

-- Uninstalled the graphics driver / rebooted --> no change

-- Rolled back the graphics driver / rebooted --> no change

-- Used both usb-c and hdmi cables to connect to the monitor --> no change

-- No secondary monitor detected in the intel graphics card panel and in win10 display settings

-- Rebooted a dozen of times --> no change

-- Installed all latest updates --> no change

-- uninstalled some of the recent driver updates (not related to the display but you never know) --> no change

The monitor when connected lights up but then goes to standby mode. I can charge my laptop via the usb-c connection of the monitor but that's pretty much it

I am really out of ideas on this one.

Hi cgeo!

Welcome to our forums community.

Were there any recent changes or any updates installed before the issue arise? Try installing the firmware and driver of the Thunderbolt here: https://support.lenovo.com/in/en/solutions/ht508988. Another option to install all updates is through the Vantage app. Run the updates and install all detected updates.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the quick reply.

All the updates have already been installed via the vantage app.

The only updates I saw installed before the issue started are

Intel Management Engine Firmware 12.0.49.1534

Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.67.17.48

I tried rolling back, but there is no change

The thunderbold driver seems to be installed as well since I get this in the logs

There is a previous driver, comparing versions.
Installed driver version = 1.41.729.0
Installation driver version = 1.41.729.0
Installation driver version equals to installed driver version, driver installation will be skipped.
No installation required.

Try installing the recently released BIOS update for your machine. You can download it manually here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-yoga-4th-gen-type-20sa-20sb/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI. Well, I upgraded the BIOS firmware to the latest as suggested and all of a sudden the screen is recognised. I am stil not sure this was the root cause of the issue but in any case I report it as such.

At the same time, I could successfully install the thunderbold driver and firmware upgrade which were also failing a few days ago.

Two birds with one stone.

Thanks!

Good to hear that and you're very much welcome.
