Lenovo X1 Yoga 4th Gen Fingerprint Issue

2019-07-28, 16:09 PM

Hi there,

I recently got myself a ThinkPag X1 Yoga as a work laptop after previously owning several other ThinkPads. I had the laptop set up by an IT colleague who installed the latest version Windows 10 Enterprise on it. I am having some troubles getting my fingerprint set up now though. Whenever I go the the setup and Windows prompts me to place my finger on the reader, the system crashes with the following messages as soon as I place my finger on the reader:

The system clearly recognizes the fingerprint reader as I get to that stage, and also because the error message only appears as soon as I place my finger on the fingerprint reader. I checked the driver and it's the latest one (6.0.19.1105). I also re-installed the driver but this didn't solve anything either. Could anyone help me with this issue?

Was it working with the other version of Windows? Do you NEED the enterprise edition?

You should also try to install a different driver all together rather than reinstall the same updated one.

I only just got the Laptop this week. I briefly had an old version of Windows 10 from 2007 installed and it didnt work either. I need to use the enterprise edition, as this is what we have a license for in work. Where could I source an alternative driver from?

From device manager, go to the driver for it and choose to update it. Click to choose from a list of drivers rather than it to search for the most up to date one. From there, simply choose a driver that isn't the currently installed one.

If there's only one choice there or the issue persists, try the drivers that come by default for your system that you can get here:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/br/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-type-20fb-20fc/downloads

EDIT: Looking up the X1 Yoga drivers leads me to X1 carbon drivers. I'm not sure if they're the same drivers or if they're compatible, but I assume they likely will be. If they don't work, you can always go back to your previous driver versions.

Let me know what happens.

I can't seem to chose the driver. When I click on "update driver", I can only chose between atomatically searching for an updated driver or browsing the computer. When browsing, it always goes back to the standard one. I also installed the X1 Carbon drivers, but couldn't get them to run, it always defaults to the currently installed driver.

EDIT: I found the option, but even with the X1 Driver installed, it doesn't show up in the list:

I see, thanks for the screenshot. So pressing "Browse my computer for driver software" doesn't pull up a list of drivers for you?

While you're there, go to the Power Management tab and make sure to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". This may fix the issue

Found the various drivers now, but none seem to work. Funnily enough, one old one now lets me get one step further in the setup of the fingerprint reader. However, it's asking me to swipe the finger instead of placing it on the reader. It also then doesn't recognise the finger. Do you have any idea where I could try find some alternative drivers?

I usually find more than enough alternatives when browsing or I already know which driver version I want and install. You can try some of these:

https://support.lenovo.com/br/en/downloads/ds103635

Also, did you do what I said about the power management thing in device manager? It's very possible that the original driver is functional but the computer is keeping it off forcefully. You should try out disabling that feature and trying again with the original driver. If it doesn't work, you can then go on a driver frenzy to see what works.

If nothing works, you should call Lenovo and let them know the issue. They may take it in and fix it themselves or give you a replacement.

Let me know what happens.

Good day.

For reference, here are all the official X1Y4 drivers:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-yoga-4th-gen-type-20qf-20qg/downloads

Also for reference, I'm running that same driver version on my X1Y4. No issues whatsoever with my fingerprint reader, but I'm running factory-loaded Win10Pro 1903 with all updates applied.

Regards.

For future reference: I ended up resetting windows and that solved my problem. I have no idea what caused it in the first place, but a full reset seemed to have helped solved it.

This helped me too
