Lenovo X13/X390 Auto restart/Shutdown after being idle for certain time

We have several (> 10) brand new Lenovo X13 and Lenovo X390, they have some strange issues as below:

Lenovo X390 - auto shutdown when the computer is idle for certain time (can be 15mins / 1 hour / 5 hours)

Lenovo X13 - auto restart when the computer is idle for certain time (can be 15mins / 1 hour / 5 hours)

Above issues never appear when the computer is being used, also didn't experience any BSOD.

All these computers are Win10 20H2 with latest windows update + latest driver update (from Lenovo Vantage.)

Below is the event log from one of the X13, already called the service and replaced motherboard for this computer on 19/Mar, issue still persist....

Has anyone experience similar issue?

Re:Lenovo X13/X390 Auto restart/Shutdown after being idle for certain time

Hello RichardLL,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

The event 41 kernel power means that there is something happened unexpectedly that blocked Windows from turning off properly and there is a message saying that “The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.

This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly

I suggest that you update the drivers thru the support site instead of Vantage.
Make sure that Windows is up to date.
Another thing to try is to go to the power settings and disable the sleep/hibernate mode for your computer, including the hard drive.

By the way, you've mentioned that one of the X13 was already serviced: motherboard replacement? Was it just one unit or all of your X13s?
How about the X390s?
Update us how it goes

Re:Lenovo X13/X390 Auto restart/Shutdown after being idle for certain time

This similar issue is also happened to me.

I'm using X390, the BIOS is up to date to the latest version 1.17 from Lenovo Vantage as well as the drivers. The windows is also the same version as mine.

There is no issue while the laptop is in use, however if we keep the laptop idling, it does seem when it goes to sleep, the laptop screen turns blank and stop responding to any keyboard or mouse hover action. No BSOD found at all as well as dump file.

Putting the sleep & hibernate setting to Never with no success.

Re:Lenovo X13/X390 Auto restart/Shutdown after being idle for certain time

Hello,
I could not figure out what is the exact trouble I had, Looking at the event viewer log info is also unhelpful.

So, I decided to downgrade the BIOS version to N2SET22W 1.16 (machine type 20SC).

The unexpected shutdown issue while the laptop being idle has now gone away. It does seem that the latest BIOS 1.17 version has an issue in it.

Thanks.

Thanks!

Since those notebooks have already updated drive thru Lenovo Vantage, I will try your suggestion in coming new notebooks.

All these notebooks have set sleep/hibernate to Never, will also try your suggestion - "hard drive".

Yes, just one X13 has been replaced motherboard and problem persist after that, we don't think it is related, we didn't call the service for others.

It would be best to try updating the BIOS directly from the support site manually instead.
This would assure that latest available firmware are applied.

Re:Lenovo X13/X390 Auto restart/Shutdown after being idle for certain time

I wish you the best of luck figuring this out. I've never been able to get mine to stop doing it and I've tried everything. I suspect it has something to do with Lenovo's battery saving tech but I can't prove it. It is an unacknowledged wide spread issue. I'm pretty confident this won't ever get solved but I'll keep an eye on the forums. I just always plan to lose everything I'm doing every time I let my computer idle.

It may also be suggested to have it reported to technical support so the issue would be checked further.

Re:Lenovo X13/X390 Auto restart/Shutdown after being idle for certain time

In my case downgrading the UEFI-Firmware to 1.40 resolved my issueUpdate: No the problem persists. You can downgrade by running `fwupdmgr downgrade` on Linux.

I have an X13 Yoga 1. generation with firmware version 1.41. After the replacement of the mainboard I had installed the version 1.42 which resulted in auto restart after some idle time (after the monitor goes off) on Archlinux with kernel version 5.19.8. Fiddling with Power settings in UEFI did not help.

I also tested with version 1.41, but the problem persists. Version 1.41 was not available in `fwupdmgr downgrade`, but it was possible to download the version 1.41 by manually decrementing the version number in the UEFI Firmware download URL found on the driver site.

Update2: My hunch is that the new motherboard has problems, because on my old motherboard I had the firmware version 1.41. I will contact technical support.
