This morning my X201 has started misbehaving and I think it's a problem with the LCD cable (in particular the part that connects to the Hall Switch).
- very, very faint Thinkpad logo when switching on, after which the screen is blank
- Bluetooth and Wireless lights illuminate but nothing else
- Window startup chime plays
- If I then start to close the laptop, when I get to about 30 degrees away from it being fully folded the other lights come on and the screen displays correctly.
- If I start to reopen the laptop it will go into suspend mode.
I've read this post and I think, based on the symptoms, the problem isn't with the Hall switch itself but the cable that connects it to the motherboard. However I'm not sure that the replacement part cited in that post (44C9991) is the correct one for my model.
My product number is 3680-VV8 which I can't find when searching on the Lenovo site and only rarely shows up in searches elsewhere (e.g. here). I've checked this page (and the equivalent for the WXGA+ screen) and 44C9991 is the only part that's compatible with any of the 3680- series, so it's likely that it will work but I'd like to know for sure before I order a replacement. (I'm not sure what the -CTO suffix means on product numbers by the way - could that mean "all suffixes"?)
Any advice welcome e.g.
- how to confirm the part for this model number
- whether, based on the symptoms, it could be anything other than the cable that I should test for first

Have you tried looking at the HMM(hardware maintenance manual) ? Sorry if you already did. Also CTO just meant configure to order.

Thanks - I hadn't seen that but had seen equivalent lists online. It looks like that 44C9991 part fits all 3680-*** models regardless of the screen resolution (WXGA or WXGA+) which is encouraging. And the other cable assembly part doesn't mention compatibility with any of the 3680 models. I wonder if my -VV8 is some flavour of Configured to Order?
Also I tested the machine with a magnet this afternoon:
-When the laptop is unfolded (screen dim / blank) moving the magnet near to the Hall switch on the LH side of the screen has no effect
-When the laptop is nearly folder (30 degrees) and the screen is on, moving the magnet near to the Hall switch puts the machine into suspend mode
I think this means that the Hall switch itself is OK and the cable is most likely my problem - confirmation / dissenting opinions welcome.

FYI. This is your current config:
ThinkPad X201 - 3680-VV8 i5-520M(2.4GHz) 2GB RAM 160GB 7200rpm HD 12.1in 1280x800 LCD Intel HD Graphics Intel 802.11agn wireless WWAN option Bluetooth Modem 1Gb Ethernet UltraNav Secure Chip Camera 6c Li-Ion Win7 Pro 32
I also guess the HAL switch is ok, leaving the possible culprits to be either a bad cable or a bad panel. Since the former is much cheaper to get I would also recommend you to swap the cable first and see what happens

For the record.. I'm typing this on my X201. I bought the 44C9991 cable from a well-known auction site; fitted it this afternoon and everything is now working. The steps in the Hardware Maintenance Manual were very clear; all I'd say is that you do NOT need to bother remove the PCI Express cards (LAN/WiMax/LAN/USB) mentioned but you do need to take careful note of where the black wires on either side of the screen assembly should be placed when refitting.
Thanks to everyone who responded; I appreciate the help.
