Linux S3 cannot resume from sleeping after updating bios to v1.44

2021-08-02, 17:06 PM

I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 and running both Windows and Arch Linux. It works well since I updated its bios to v1.44 yesterday.

As I don't like windows modern standby, I select "Linux S3" in the bios menu and it works as expected before v1.44. I tried under Windows 10 and Arch Linux and both can resume from sleeping state.

However, after I upgraded the bios to v1.44, the "Linux S3" does not work anymore. The laptop cannot be waken up and the only way to fix that is to force it shut down.  I tried both under Windows and Arch Linux and neither works.

This forced me to change the sleeping mode back to windows modern standby and it works fine under both Windows 10 and Linux. But I really want Linux S3, as it won't drain the battery.

Can the developers check and then release the hotfix as soon as possible please? Really appreciate your help.

Did you re-install Windows?

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

I am running Manjaro Arch Linux single boot with firmware 1.44, S3 mode and Kernel 5.13 and resume is working. Just Bluetooth is not enabled after resuming but I guess I can handle this.

Out of curiosity as you are running a similar setup as mine: Do you suffer from awkward fan and heat issues I described in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-9th-gen-connected-via-USB-c-to-external-monitor-have-CPU-permament-trottaling/m-p/5081541?page=1#5393007

It has been resolved now! Simply switching to windows modern standby then switching it back and it should work.
