Are you running the Windows 7 Lenovo factory image?

If the machine is downloading and installing security patches and fixes from Windows update, that could be one reason.  I would allow a day or two for the machine to do that, index content, and other chores.  Things typically settle down after that.

You can download TPfanControl to set the fan speed yourself.

By the way, web surfing can use alot of GPU.

There's a setting in the ThinkPad power control application which allows you to set the fan speed at max for better performance. you may want to check that setting.

At idle pretty quite.  I get a little whine under load.  Turn on Turbo Boost + and it sounds like a little tornado.

Mine is almost silent.  I received it in the  late September batch.

Hello to all. What a shame on Lenovo and on their support in Dubai - UAE... I bought 2 new X1 machines from Lenovo and found that the fan sound is horrible.   The support team in Dubai, after failing to solve the problem, tried to convince me that it is normal for a laptop to cause this noise. What a shame!!!! Regretting this purchase!!!

Never will buy or recommend Lenovo again

Shame...
