[Method Share] How to change X230's keyboard to X220's.

I just want to share a method here.

If you hate X230's keyboard and want to install X220's keyboard instead,

please bear in mind that the palmrest should also use X220's style.

Re: [Method Share] How to change X230's keyboard to X220's.

It's been done successfully, but the key mappings are different, so it's a no-go until there's a BIOS patch.

You could throw around your ThinkPad because it won't break.
You can still throw around your ThinkPad because it will break anyway even if you treasure it.

Re: [Method Share] How to change X230's keyboard to X220's.

Another Lenovo fail. Lenovo could make a BIOS setting allowing to switch between these two keyboard layouts and sell ThinkPad classic keyboards as an upgrade option for those who can't stand the new stupid layout. The cost of such BIOS setting is almost zero I guess (just a switch of two different tables) and these keyboards are already designed and made.

But no, Lenovo will not do that Smiley Frustrated Lenovo will rather save every minute and every $ just to lose as much of old ThinkPad customers as possible.

I'm sure that such option would bring those magic 15,000 orders if available Smiley Happy

Are just keyboard keys different, or also buttons such as power, volume, etc? Keyboard keys can be remapped with software (e.g. in Windows, using SharpKeys), although it won't work during BIOS screens.

Re: [Method Share] How to change X230's keyboard to X220's.

RichardW,

usually such tools don't work for key combinations like Fn+key

x220 • Gobi 2000 3g | hdd, msata ssd, wwan, wifi, gps -- unique hand-made config
ThinkPad 25 Special Anniversary Edition. #retro. Signed by D.Hill
T470p | X1 Carbon Gen3 | Miix 2 10" | Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android) + BT Keyboard
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 Wireless Router, HDD 1 TB, BT Speaker, Power Bank, Mobile Projector

Do it well, worse becomes itself

Unfortunately this will work for remapping the (working) key codes to a different Windows virtual key codes only. But if the hardware key code or combination (Fn + key) does not work at all, no way.

BTW is Matt Kohut still in Lenovo http://blog.lenovo.com/author/mkohut/ ? His blog is (was ?) good place for such article and discussions.

The only way to get the X220 keyboard working on the X230 is to hack BIOS.  Obviously I can't recommend that.

He is still at Lenovo but in a different role and I doubt he will be making blog posts like that anymore.

That's a pity. His blog has always been technically focused.
