Mobile broadband

I have an X1 Carbon Thinkpad:

X1 Carbon (Type 20A7, 20A8) Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 20A8, Model 003YMZ

It has a slot for a SIM card on the back, but I don't know how to get this to work. Simply popping a SIM in there does nothing! Does anyone know (a) if this model is actually configured for mobile broadband, and (b) if so, how to activate it?

Many thanks!

Re: Mobile broadband

Hello

There isn't wwan modem factory preinstalled in your laptop. WWAN antennas set and a sim card reader are there.

Re: Mobile broadband

Thanks for your quick response. So would it be worth me getting that installed (if so, what sort of cost is involved) or would it be better for me to use a dongle instead? (Tethering to my phone is not an option for me.)

Re: Mobile broadband

Definitely, the USB dongle is much more cheaper than built-in wwan modem. Especially the device cellular operator branded, with contract. But the built-in modem is more safer to use, w/out risk to damage it. Also, such modem drains less power, might have better sensitivity with laptop antennas.

WWAN cards compatible with x1c gen2 are below:
FRU 04W3842 - Ericsson N5321 HSPA+ 21Mbps M.2 WWAN Support Win8.1
FRU 04X6014 - Sierra EM7345 LTE/HSPA+ 42Mbps M.2 Card

On-line store in UK:
http://www.ibm.com/shop/uk/parts/

Use FRU p/n above.

Hello and welcome, DouglasMac

To specify your laptop configuration provide, please, its MTM (Machine-Type-Model). If it's a CTO model send me its serial number via the forum private messages sevice at your profile page.

Re: Mobile broadband

The answer is almost the same as in my message #2 above - there isn't wwan modem factory preinstalled in your laptop. Unfortunately, I can't confirm whether the wwan antennas installed - Lenovo public partslookup service doesn't show any information regarding the wlan/wwan antennas set for this laptop.

Never share laptop s/n in the public.
I've removed it for your privacy.

Re: Mobile broadband

"WWAN upgradable" means laptop has wwan antennas set factory installed (wlan antennas set is installed anyway). So, you can purchase the wwan modem yourself depending on your network requests and environment, modem availability, as well the budget.

x260 compatible modems are:
Sierra Wireless em7455 - FRU 00JT542
Huawei me906s - FRU 00JT491
