Motherboard 00UP985 vs 00HN769

2018-04-02, 13:27 PM

Dear all,

My laptop's (carbon x1 2nd gen) motherboard (00HN769 SR1EA i7-4600U 8GB) is broken. I don't know why the motherboard is broken, but it was working just fine before I did the full system update on the day before it dies. I had my laptop just over 2 years so the warranty is over. The service charge for fixing it by lenovo service center is 1000 Euros. It is such an insane price for me that I would rather buy a new laptop if I had to give it to lenovo service center. If possible, I want to replace it by myself and solve the problem.

I want to replace the motherboard (part no. 00HN769) so I did some research. I searched through the internet and found out that the part no. 00UP985 looks exactly the same has the same specification SR1EA i7-4600U 8GB. I presume that while performing the service on the laptop, I shall be able to configure the difference, but I'm not completely sure.

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between 00UP985 vs 00HN769. What can be further the complications if I replace the motherboard with a different model?

Yours sincerely,

Ayaa

There's a single difference - 00UP985 doesn't have any OS license embedded in BIOS. If you use Linux, then this shouldn't be an issue, but if you use Windows, then you would need to buy a new OS license.

Welcome to the Community

FRU 00UP985 is almost similar sparepart but doesn't have Windows OEM product key in the BIOS, i.e.it's the mobo for the systems without Windows preloaded.

Thank you very much.

It is good to know. This explains why motherboard with no. 00UP985 is cheaper than no. 00HN769.

Just out of curiosity, can one by the BIOS OS licence for Windows and cofigure on 00UP985? How much does Windows OS licence cost?

You have to purchase retail (or volume, if you are able) license, not OEM.

Would it be possible to install a i5 or i3 board instead?
