Multiple monitors X-1 Gen 6: How can I run 2 external monitors?

2020-01-25, 12:42 PM

I am successfully running 1 external monitor (HDMI), and I am now considering trying to use as a 2d external monitor a Lenovo L192 monitor that is now available to me. Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about doing this? Since the Lenovo's cabling is VGA, I will certainly need an adapter, presumably to USB-C or USB-3.1. But are there any other considerations/limitations that I need to take into account? Thanks for any help that you can give!

Hi JoeSchmoe! Just to clarify, could you provide to us the model of the computer you are trying to use on the monitors? Using an adapter doesn't guarantee that it will be detected so it will be best to use an adapter from Lenovo like this: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories/acc100239. You can check the user guide from the link provided.

Thanks for the reply, and good point. It's a 20KG. So, 6th Gen X1 (8th Gen Intel Core i7, which is what misled me). I do have a Lenovo VGA-HDMI adapter, so that's no problem. But of course I only have one HDMI port on the laptop. If you need more info, don't hesitate to ask!

The only way for you to extend the display is through the USB-C or HDMI port. Since you already have the HDMI to VGA adapter, then you will be needing a USB-C to VGA adapter if you wish to add external monitors on your machine.

Another option for you is to use a docking station. Below are the compatible docking stations for your machine.

Re: Multiple monitors X-1 Gen 8: How can I run 2 external monitors?

Thanks for coming back so quickly. To summarize matters as I understand them:

1. My laptop can run up to 2 external monitors and no more

  • Thanks for referring me to the manual. I should have started there myself.

2. This limit exists whether I connect the monitors directly to my laptop or do that through a dock.

  • I.e., using a dock gives me a broader choice of connector types, but it does not increase the number of monitors that I can use with my laptop.

3. If I choose not to use a dock (which I am likely to do, because the extra features that a dock provides are for my purposes not worth the cost), I can hook one monitor up to my laptop's HDMI port and the other to a USB-C port, in each case using adapters for my monitors' VGA output cables.

Is the above correct?

Yes it is correct. According to the processor, it can support up to a maximum of 3 displays including the main screen. You can refer to this link: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/97472/intel-core-i5-7300u-processor-3m-cache-up-to-3-50-ghz.html

Hope that answers your questions.
