My X41 from China to US. It's broken now. I'm seriously need to rescue data in it!

2010-09-19, 2:51 AM

I got my Thinkpad X41 about 5 years ago in China. And last month I come here US for college. But recently, it was accidentally dropped to floor. When I restarted it and I found it was broken-couldn't find system and I can heard its hard drive's sound of "Ka---Ka---..." Obviously, its hard drive was broken. After that I've been to BestBuy and some other places to ask for repair, but they tried but they all couldn't read the data. The hard drive was produced by Hitachi, and it was 40GB.

There is very very very very important data in the drive. I'm so worried.

All I want now is to rescue the data of the drive!

Could someone please tell me what I should do or tell me any places which can do it or tell me how can I contact the IBM/Lenovo's service.

PLEASE!!!

I'm in University Park, PA 16803

My email is

Thank yall.

Lenovo and IBM don't offer data recovery services, you would have find an aftermarket company to do it. You can google the term data recovery services. It should be around 300 to 1000 USD, depending on how they charge for the recovery service.

There are several very good data recovery experts such as Ontrack.

The good news is that from  your description of what happened, to recover your data they'd have to remove the platters and mount them elsewhere to read the data. The bad news is that this service is extremely expensive - there is an initial flat fee cost and a scaled fee which is dependent on how long it will take them to read all the information on the drive.

I had a drive which crashed about two years ago and inquired on the cost to recover the data...you're looking at a minimum of $4000+ easily.

The lesson to be learned is back up your data regularly. A 500GB USB external hard drive is under $60...cheap insurance and extra comfort in case your laptop gets lost or stolen.

Thank you a lot.

It's really expensive.

Now, I'm thinking about to post my hard drive to China to rescue it. I found such service is much cheaper in China.
