My x40 hard drive crashed

2010-02-11, 2:31 AM

Hi,

My X40 hard drive crashed. I bought a new one and plugged it in. The BIOS seems to recognize it. I started the machine with Bart PW from the USB drive, but Bart PE doesn't recognize the hard drive. Not sure if it's because the hard drive is not formated, or if it is no good. Does anyone know any other way to start the machine without the hard drive? So I can get Windows installed on it again?

Thanks in advance for help!

John

Welcome to the forum!

Have you replaced the hard drive with the equivalent Hitachi one (1.8"/9.5mm/4200rpm) ?

Cheers,

George

Hi Grorge,

Yes I replaced with a 1.8" Hitachi hard drive (otherwise it won't plug in, right?). The model number is HTC426020G7AT00. It's thinner than the old one (HITACHI_DK13FA-40B) but the length and width are the same and it plugs in fine. Since the BIOS reconginize it it should at least be the right type, right?

Thanks

John

probably just unformatted (most likely you bought an OEM disk rather than a Retail, no real big difference except ~10-20 dollars cheaper) if u pop windows installation disk/usb it should recognize it, if not you can do repair mode in windows installation and just use the format command in a command line. Sorry but I cant help you more than that

Hi ZombieKing,

I was kind of suspecting that it might be because the HD wasn't formatted too.

I have tried windows installation disks from an USB CD drive (x40 doesn't come with an internal CD drive) but somehow it won't start up. I set the USB CD drive to the top in the boot order and it won't help. When Bart PE boots up it recongizes the USB CD drive, but the machine just won't start from it. I have tried Windows XP, 2000 and even Win 95. None of them work. And I can't format the hard disk on a different machine either because it can't plug in to anything.

Thanks

John
