NANO WWAN

2021-05-15, 23:47 PM

Is the antenna built into all of the units?  Can I just open the bottom and install the WWAN card and it will work or is there a manufacturing difference between the units that have WWAN and units that don't?

Have a look around the PSREF page - the model tab and the spec tab.  Looks like it comes in 3 flavors: WWAN card installed, WWAN upgradable, and not upgradable - as in no antennas, and likely no SIM slot, perhaps even no WWAN card socket.  Hard to tell re the SIM slot and socket.

Using the WWAN filter in the PSREF page, it looks like there's currently only one upgradable MT-M, and the OS language is Simplified Chinese, so not likely offered in the NA market.

For Non WWAN model the base cover is CNC cut aluminum alloy.

For WWAN model the base cover is composite material, which is made of partial plastic (for WWAN antenna) and partial magnesium alloy.

Thus,

If your unit has a shining looking sharp edge CNC cut aluminum base cover, then it is NOT wwan upgradable.

If your unit has a plastic looking dull edge base cover, then it is wwan upgradable.

This is true for all modern thinkpads.

I have the 20UN-005JUS model which for some reason is not listed on the site.  This model has the  i7-1180G7 processor.  I think I have the carbon case.

Does anyone have a confirmation on this model?  I am wondering if it is worth it to try.
