Re: NEW Battery Tip - Applicable to some T, X, R models and batteries

2009-08-19, 16:20 PM

Another Linux user here with a Thinkpad X60.  I recently bought a replacement battery as mine had developed a very short battery life.

It's an X60 1706-CTO thinkpad with battery FRU 93P5030 so is potentially affected by this issue.

Perhaps there is someone who I (we) can email with the battery details to see if we qualify for a replacement?

Re: NEW Battery Tip - Applicable to some T, X, R models and batteries

I have an X61t with the 8-cell battery that has just died a week ago (I get the error).

The FRU is 93P5032 (not on the list) so Lenovo won't give me a replacement.

I bought from Lenovo expecting these problems from not happening, but if they do, I was expecting them to fix it...

What can I do?

Ok, I have to admit I feel a bit screwed now...

Back in March (less than year of use) the battery of my x60 laptop died overnight with similar symtoms.

But I seem to be not eligible for recall :S

Battery FRU P/N is 42T4506 and ASM P/N is 92P1172

Defective battery

2009-08-31, 2:47 AM

Whenever the battery reaches 78%, it will drop down to 1%  in a few seconds and go hibernating. When I connect the adapter to charge the battery, it takes about half an hour to an hour  to go up to 23% (there it stays for a while), and then suddenly it reaches 100% in a sec.

I tried to run the battery diagnostic tool result:

"Thank you for using the Lenovo Battery Diagnostic Tool. Your battery is not eligible for replacement at this time because the diagnostic did not find any error and determined that the battery capacity is in the normal range for its age and cycle count. However, if you still believe that your battery has low capacity, you may want to take the following actions:"

I reset the battery with no change in the result. (Twice)

cycle count.        76

first used date.    2008-01

serial no.            4674

fru part no.         93p5030

Should I buy new battery or ry to replace it is it the battery or my x60 1706-cto

Hi,

I also have an 8-cell battery with FRU 42T4506 and it died several weeks ago with similar symptoms after only 25 cycles. I bought the machine on Dec. 2007, but I don't always have the battery on my machine. When I do not use it, I kept it at 40% capacity. However, it still deteriorated after one year, when it can only hold 1.5hrs or less (I never tried to let it run 1.5hrs on battery only anyway). Now it is completely dead.

I agree with seanzha that this is definitely a quality problem. If Lenovo doens't want to recall our batteries, at least you should give us some coupon to buy the new battery.

Re: NEW Battery Tip - Applicable to some T, X, R models and batteries

Hi Mark,

I hope you can help me!

I was using my X61 the other day, battery life was about a third a suddenly, it turned itself off.  It hadn't overheated and there had not been a power surge.

I then took the notebook home and plugged it in.  Same error at startup: 0190 Critical Low Battery Error.  The adapter is fine and the power supply at home is ok so I suppose that means that (a) the battery dramatically died or (b) something more serious has happened.

I have a couple of questions:

Does the X61 run without battery, i.e. on AC power only? If so, then I will be able to properly identify whether or not it is simply the battery which is broken.

and

Are you familar with this sequence of problems?

I would be extremely grateful if you could help me.  I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment!

Thank you very much,

Hi Mark,

I have a Thinkpad X60. I just got this news about battery recall.

My Thinkpad model: X60
My battery FRU part number: 93P5028
The symptom: Low battery capacity (the battery can't use any more)

My battery meets all the criteria, but I can't run the Battery Diagnostic Tool because the battery cause the laptop hang/freeze. so how can I replace it?

Thank you.

Dear Mark

Since I am not a heavy "user" in computing I mean, I was not in the habit of looking for solutions on my own on the net and so when my computer power management anounced "battery will not charge"  approx. 1 year after purchasing my very expensive "no trouble" machine, I contacted the dealer and he contacted Lenovo here in Israel who promptly announced that the battery was out of warranty and sold me a new one without even mentioning the recall or the need to run a diagnostic.

Not only that but the "new battery comes with only 3 months of warranty!

Is all this ok in your book?

What can I do now, I no longer have the old battery or it's part number, they have "kindly" taken that for recycling (I hope)

Mona
