Re: New 2014 X1 Carbon owner very unhappy.

>1) Who's dumb idea was it to put the speakers on the bottom??? Dumb from so many aspects.

Anything that encourages people to use earphones instead of annoying everyone else is a good idea!!! ;)

>3) Trackpoint is pretty much useless without buttons on the trackpad. I don't use the trackpoint but I definitely see what everyone is talking about with using it a bit.

I wouldn't say it's useless but it's most certainly use less and less usable than TrackPoints with real buttons. What was Lenovo thinking when they decided to mess with the one feature that distinguishes ThinkPads from everything else (including their own Idea line?)

>4) Keyboard is well-thought out and laid out cleverly, feels good too. I don't know why many are complaining about it unless they're just used to their old Lenovo. The Insert key was too much to leave out though.

You've answered your question in the last sentence. The Insert key continues to be used by many applications and is a lot more useful than Lenovo seems to have recognized. The workaround of using the adaptive keyboard is both annoying and impractical.

The adaptive keyboard is a pale imitation of what it could be. I'm waiting for software that makes it more usable.

And finally 5) is the absence of a uSD or SD card reader, especially in a device that supports only one SSD internally. That means the only way to add storage is by means of an ugly wart that destroys the sleek, slim look of the X1C2 that people paid a premium for.

Wow, I just realized the card tray in the back is for SIM cards on supported models and NOT an SD card reader. That is messed up!!! :smileyfrustrated:

The protective film is packaging material. It's meant to be removed after purchase.

@RichardW, the matte film on the screen of the X1 Carbon Gen 2 is not packaging material, and is not intended to be removed.

No its not, actually. But if you order a non-touch X1, there is no annoying film on the screen.

non-touch version, doesn't have a glossy gorilla cover either.

I'd be OK with some of the design changes, as long as everything worked! Have had issues with:

1. Trackpad not responding on wake-up (resolved with driver update)
2. Wifi not able to connect until manually re-connecting (still not resolved even after sending it in)
3. SSD detection error - still unresolved

For a top-of-the-line machine, this is not acceptable. Have been a happy Lenovo customer for many years, but this will make me not recommend or use them again.

Hope Lenovo can somehow redeem themselves, but it's going to be difficult at this point. Maybe I should have gone with an X240.

Re: New 2014 X1 Carbon owner feedback

following this discussion and looking online I am surprised that the issue with the insert key is not addressed. Clearly there must be a key combination available for the Insert key right?

Pls. advice

Thanks

There is a workaround.

Fn + B = Break
Fn + I = Insert
Fn + P = Pause
Fn + T = Print Screen
Fn+ K = Screen Lock
Fn + S = system Request

BIOS 1.14?

I am at 1.13 and System Update is not showing a 1.14 available.   Is it public?  Is there another way to get such faster than through system update?

EDIT:  I found the new 1.14 BIOS on the driver webpage.  Odd, I even unistalled and reinstalled System Update and it still wasn't showing it.  Would there be a 1+ week lag on system update showing a new BIOS?
