New 40Y7704 65W AC adaptor has 2 pin socket - is it genuine?

Last week I bought a spare 65 AC adaptor - part no 40Y7704 - and was surprised to find it came with a 2 pin power cord (i.e. where it plugs into the power brick) rather than the 3 pin "cloverleaf" one that my original (and other ThinkPads I've owned) had.

Is that right, or might this be a fake? It was bought as a genuine Lenovo part from a reputable website and looks convincing enough (shape, label, logos etc) though came in a plain box without a Lenovo seal. Perhaps this is just a change in policy (it is a bit harder to find cloverleaf power cords than 2 pin ones IMO)?

Lenovo has been shipping 2-prong AC plugs on their adapters, at least on this side of the pond, for quite a few years. In fact the 2-prong plugs aren't even polarized (one prong wider than the other.) They wouldn't do this if the adpaters weren't properly insulated so that grounding wasn't an issue.

The only 3-prong ThinkPad adapters I have are 16V units from the IBM era, i.e. pre T60 series.

Re: New 40Y7704 65W AC adaptor has 2 pin socket - is it genuine?

I agree they were probably (all?) 3 pin cloverleaf sockets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60320#C5.2FC6_coupler) in the IBM days (e.g. the 16V power supply of my X40) but my X220 came with a 3 pin one as well (20V 65W). According to that power adaptor it was manufactured on 2011 06 14 and the new one I've just bought says it was made a couple of months later - 2011.08 - which sort of suggests Lenovo switched at least what they were shipping in Europe around the middle of last year.

Anyway, that's good to know - it has been working fine BTW - I was just a little surprised. Thanks!

compatible yes and fake possibly but unlikely

According to this site the 40Y7704 adapter is the correct marketing part number for the UK 65W power adapter which in my experience should also include the power cord 42T5120 or 42T5035 which according to this site are both 3 prong "cloverleaf", or as we call them in Germany "Mickey Mouse", power cables.

I could draw some conclusions here and would be interested to know the FRU (not ASM) part number from the power adapter in order to compare it with the sites linked to.

Re: New 40Y7704 65W AC adaptor has 2 pin socket - is it genuine?

Thanks Andy!

The new 2 pin adaptor says:

P/N 92P1158

FRU P/N 92P1157 << curiously not a 42... in sight!

(it came with the correct cord/UK plug in the box)

My original 3 pin adaptor says:

P/N 92P1154

FRU P/N 42T5283

Simon

PS. I'd only just come across the term "micky mouse" - I suppose it does look like him!

Re: New 40Y7704 65W AC adaptor has 2 pin socket - is it genuine?

Hi Simon,

thanks for the information.

the 92P1157 should be a three pin adapter according to this site, now I'm curious as to why your new adapter has marketing and field replacement unit (FRU) numbers on it for three pin when it has only has a two pin connector??

the 42T5283 checks out as a three pin adapter.

Andy

My gut feel reaction is that it may well not be a genuine lenovo part.

Switch-mode power adpaters are one of the most  frequently and easily "faked" electronic products in the market.

Re: New 40Y7704 65W AC adaptor has 2 pin socket - is it genuine?

It's funny - the thought hadn't even crossed my mind until I saw the 2 pin power cord. That said it would incredibly convincing if it were a fake - the mouldings, materials, labels etc, look perfect.

I did once inadvertently buy a non-genuine battery for an older Thinkpad - that looked similar (i.e. same yellow labels etc) but didn't have any IBM logos on it and was clearly below the standard of the OEM part (the connector pins didn't line up properly and the plastics weren't of the same quiality). After that I've been particularly careful to check that websites say it's made by Lenovo and not just "for" Lenovo laptops.

My power supply with delivery was about 60% the price same one on the Lenovo shop, though it was still probably nearly twice the price of non-genuine ones. I have emailed the supplier and they have said it's genuine - they also supply parts for the other big vendors so I don't really have a reason to doubt them (and I didn't mention but I ordered a spare battery at the same time and that definitely looked genuine - the new "44" model number, Lenovo manufacturing label and seal).

Anyway, I've had it running for most of a week now and it seems OK so I'm not at all concerned. Hopefully this post will help others if they're in the same boat.

Thanks to everyone for your input - looks like we might be in a 2 pin Lenovo world going forward Smiley Happy

Simon
