New BIOS version (2.14) out for X61/X61s

2008-06-18, 18:42 PM
Anyone try out the new BIOS version available for their X61(s)?
It's available right here:

1) BIOS update utility v.2.14 - update from within Windows (XP/Vista).

2) BIOS Update v.2.14 (Bootable CD) - burn the ISO to a CD and updated the BIOS via CD

Some new fixes/updates available in this latest version:

Version 7NETB4WW (2.14)

  • (New) Security function was enhanced.
  • (New) Firmware update of Intel AMT ME.
  • (Fix) Data transmission speed of CardBus and 1394 device gets slow.

Just an update

Installed this on my X61 7675-92U and the BIOS installed fine, no problems at all, in fact I've noticed two things:

1) Much faster transfer rates in the SD slot (haven't tried the IEEE1394 yet)
2) System seems to be running cooler than before - ran BIOS 2.07 beforehand.

Anyone that has transfer rate problems (slow)( with earlier BIOS versions may like to consider this update.

Cheers all!

I have the same unit and updated the BIOS specifically to reduce heat.  While it has run a tad cooler, I'm still dissatisfied with the core temps of over 43 degrees C.  Prior to updating, and with SS&D running, I'd approach 85 degrees C !!

On an aside, I'm runnning WinXP with only some of Lenovo's apps running resident.  At 60 plus, I'd like to pare it further.  Any ideas?

I updated the X61 BIOS to 2.14, the temperature seems ok.

But what I concern is the Cardbus performance.

The change log said the performance issue of Ricoh chip is solved; but in my case,  the performance on the SATA cards with both Sil 3112 & 3512 chip is poor. (Max. R/W rate at 15MB/sec)

Somebody in other pages said that re-flash (2.14 -> 2.14) the BIOS works, but it's failed to me. The flash utility doesn't allow me to re-flash BIOS.

Any help or comment would be appreciated.

Responding to my own message, I ultimately had to send my unit in for warranty service.  Whatever they did, it's running cooler now.

I followed the link and obeyed all of the instructions but when I went to install the Bios it said that the bios image could not be found.  I put the link in the run box correctly.  I have been having intermittent keyboard issues which I thought the bios update would solve.

The semester is nearly over and I can't afford to send it in for repair at this time, but all the problems I have been having are incredibly frustrating.

I forgot to follow up my own follow up.  The heat problem returned and I was going to send it back again, but realized tech would probably just repack and send it back to me untouched.  I was able to reduce the heat by eliminating much of the bloatware, including several of Lenovo's own utilities.  I monitor it now and find that when running a spyware scan, for example, the heat builds up again.

I believe the problem is all about hardware constrictions, that is, faster components in an ever-shrinking case.  I blame developers for not implementing better cooling techniques, and am especially critical of the premium sellers like Lenovo for charging as much as they do for mediocre performance.

Nevermind. I realized that I have a tablet and it takes a different BIOS. I would not mind some advice about the keyboard problem though.  :womanmad:

I may have missed the detail about keyboard issues.  Can you explain again?
