New Carbon X1 Screen Brightness

2014-01-19, 22:16 PM

I have a new X1 Carbon QFD/Touch model and the screen brightness is being limited by something.  I could tell the brightness is being pulled back because the display actually dims noticable a few seconds after displaying the login screen.

If I install (what I think is) the CPLM3281 (ambient light sensor) driver from the GRLA05ww.exe download, the display brightens up nicely.  But the display goes dimmer again if the computer restarts or wakes up from sleep mode.

Does anyone know of a solution?  Thanks!

I have an update -- I disabled the ambient light sensor (ALS) in the Devices control panel and my display brightened significantly.  I guess I'll control the brightness manually until the ALS driver is improved.

I just saw that there is an update available from Microsoft Update. Maybe this fixes your issue?

I sent back the X1 Carbon touch because the display was too dim for me. There is a film over the touch display that I think reduces the brightness. I ordered the WQHD without touch, and I'm hoping it will be more to my liking. I have a T540p, and it is the brightest, sharpest display I have ever seen. The X1 Carbon, Lenovo's flagship, should be at least as good.

I also have the new X1 Carbon and it got annoying having the screen so dim. I would turn on the computer it would be bright for a second and then go dim. I did however try disabling the Ambient Light Sensor and that fixed everything. I guess you just have to wait for a better update, or just leave it disabled.

To disable the Ambient Light Sensor:

- Search (windows key + S on the desktop) Device Manager

- Go under sensors

- Find the ambient light sensor

- Right-click and disable it

While on battery power, here's what fixed the issue for me:

  1. Right click on desktop
  2. Display Settings
  3. Adjust screen brightness automatically turned off
