New X1 Carbon G5 Lenovo Win10 OS Image is encrypted by default you can't undo it even in windows.

2017-08-30, 1:33 AM

I have receieved in the past two days 2 brand new Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon G5 Laptops (20HQS02000).  The first one arrived and had a faulty touchpad, and had this unusual problem of an encrypted system partition - even though Windows 10 bitlocker is not configured/activated/turned on.

So this unit was sent back (due to touchpad).

The new unit, which is also a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon G5 Laptops (20HQS02000) - also has this issue.

This is preventing me from running backup software on this device. (Acronis TrueImage). I wish to run it offline, so its fast and I can ensure a perfect snapshot.

After noticing this I booted back into Windows to try and disable bitlocker. However it appears to not be turned on.  How is the drive encrypted? what is this rubbish?

I find it highly irregular and would like some kind of an explination.

I should add that I had purchased 5 X1 Carbons previously (like a month earlier).  I noticed that the default build of Windows 10 did not contain horrible bloatware like candy crush etc. And it did not have this encryption issue.

Seriously why does lenovo ship such horrible OS images.. all this does is frustrate thier customers.

Dear infocomit,

Before Windows 10  version 1706 (RS2), device encription was not applied automatically to the standard notbook PC, but it was applied to the tablet PC which supports Connected Standby or Modern Standby.

After version 1706, Windows had extended this auto device encryption support trange from modern standby system to standard notebook PC, then ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th in the range.

To disable the device encryption manually, please do the following.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Go to About section

  3. You can find "Device encryption" section at lower part and can find the "Turn off" button there.

You can refer to below article for your reference,
