New X220 is coming, would appreciate ram advice

2011-07-22, 17:31 PM

Hi, I have ordered my X220 this week, the price was too good to let it go, I currently run a X300 that is now 3yrs old. I did not had a single issue with it. After reading here, I'm not so sure about this X220, anyway, I will keep my fingers crossed. So I got it with 2GB of ram since the ram at lenovo seem overpriced.

I have look at newegg.ca (yeah, I'm Canadian, and French, so sorry for my English).

I think those one will work:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139190

They are both Kingston, it looks like it's the same thing, 2$ price difference... Can somebody tell me what's the difference? Also I just need a confirmation that it will work with my X220.

And do anybody know if Patriot ram is good? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220545

I'm looking for something that will last 3yrs without issue like my X300 did and like my T43 did. I think both was having Kingston ram.

Thank you!

as long as they are the same spec, then they will work. Hynix and Samsung are about the same in quality.

For my original X220 which I returned, Crucial sent me an exact match e4GB stick for about $38, free shipping. I've returned it to Crucial, no questions asked.

For my replacement X220 order, I will add a 4 GB lenolvo stick for about $43 (employee price) so it's covered by the system warranty.

Any SO-DIMM which is 204 pin DDR3 1333MHz CL9 should work.

As to whether one brand is better than another...... that's largely a matter of personal opinion.

I bought a Corsair 4GB (1x 4GB) Memory Kit - PC3-10600 (1333MHz) DDR3 - 1x 204-pin - SO-DIMM - 9-9-9-24 (CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9) because the price point was right for my purposes and it was in stock from the store concerned.  It works fine in my X220.

Cheers,

Bill

If you want slightly faster graphics performance, then you should get

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104257

It has higher default speed and it actually helps the integrated graphics.

Here are the mobile processors I see available for the X220 and their supported memory types (memory controller and other Northbridge functions are in the processor)...

i5-2410M: DDR3-1066/1333
i5-2520M: DDR3-1066/1333
i5-2540M: DDR3-1066/1333
i7-2620M: DDR3-1066/1333

So the DDR3-1600 will operate as 1333, right?

Reference: http://www.intel.com/products/laptop/processors/index.htm

Note: Some of the quad-core mobiles support DDR3-1066/1333/1600

Amphibulus, KVR1333D3S9/4G stick is based on Elpida memory chips, the same as Elpida stick in my x220. KVR1333D3SO/4GR
is based on Hynix memory chips.

x220 • Gobi 2000 3g | hdd, msata ssd, wwan, wifi, gps -- unique config
ThinkPad 25 Special Anniversary Edition. #Retro. Signed by D.Hill
T470p | X1 Carbon Gen3 | Miix 2 10" | Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android) + BT Keyboard
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 Wireless Router, HDD 1 TB, BT Speaker, Power Bank, Mobile Projector
