No audio output via DP -> HDMI converter after upgrading to newer version of GPU driver

2020-02-06, 19:40 PM

Just noticed audio via HDMI is no longer working, probably since one of the recent drivers/bios updates. I don't use it often so not sure I can pinpoint which driver/update. Anyone else seeing the same? Any luck in installing the non-lenove intel drivers from intel itself?

Hello Vaal1977! May we know what is the model of your device? Just to make sure everything is up to date on your machine, try running the update from the Vantage app. Install all available updates. Check pending update from Windows as well. Select the Start --> settings --> Update and Security --> Windows Update --> Select Check for updates. Update us how it goes.

It could be as simple as simple as left-clicking the speaker option in the lower right of the taskbar and selecting Intel HD Audio vs "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)" using the pulldown menu.   If the Intel HD Audio is selected, sound via HDMI and DP should work, and when you want normal sound card output, use the same process to change back to the Realtek HD Audio.

If Intel HD Audio is not present, right-click Start >> Device Manager >> Sound, Video and Game Controllers, and verify that Intel HD Audio is present and working in addition to Realtek High Definition Audio.

If that still fails to work and you want to try the latest Intel DCH Drivers provided by Intel, but are getting pointed back to Lenovo for OEM drivers, you can get around that by switching to driver used currently by your laptop to the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter".

Before starting, download the latest Intel DCH driver for your graphics adapter and disconnect any external docks/monitors for the time being.

  • Right-click on Start and select Device Manager

  • Click on "Display Adapters" to expand, and then double-click on your Intel HD Graphics adapter

  • Select the Driver tab -> "Update Driver" -> "Browse my computer for driver software" -> "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"

  • Select “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter”

  • Click “Next” (note that your screen resolution will likely change when it switches to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver).

  • Close Device Manager

  • Reboot if prompted

You should now be able to install the latest Intel DCH driver installer successfully.
