Not able to install latest NVIDIA drivers on X1 Extreme

2018-12-16, 13:11 PM

One of the things I want to pick up with my new X1 Extreme laptop is VR gaming. Although this laptop is equiped with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti graphics card (on top of the standard Intel adapter), this will not suffice for that. Therefore I bought an Aorus GTX1080 Gaming Box which I can connect to one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports. However, I only seem to be able to install the NVIDIA drivers from the Lenovo support site, which are a bit outdated: the latest driver Lenovo offers is version 388.13 while NVIDIA is at 417.35 at this moment. Windows is using the external GPU. The Occulus Rift I got connected to the Gaming Box wants me to install the latest drivers, and I cannot get it to work with the one Lenovo is providing.

The NVIDIA installer keeps on telling me that:

The standard NVIDIA graphics driver is not compatible with this Windows version.

Both the desktop and the notebook version of the NVIDIA driver yield this result.

Things I have tried:

  • Disable the integrated 1050 card
  • Updating the BIOS to the latest version (1.15)
  • Updating Windows 10 to the latest version (1809, did not work so I downgraded again to 1803 because there are graphic drivers for that version on the Lenovo site)
  • Upgrade the driver using GeForce Experience (thanks for reminding me @Isafang)

Does anyone have any more ideas for me?

I managed to get it working thanks to Greybear's answer on this post. In short:

  • download the required graphics drivers for both the internal and the external graphics adapter
  • download DDU
  • start windows in safe mode
  • start DDU and remove all Intel and NVIDIA drivers
  • start windows normally
  • disconnect internet
  • install Intel and desired NVIDIA drivers
  • reconnect internet

This helped me too

Another thing worth trying in the future, the version thats installed from the site or lenovo vantage is actually updatable through geforce experience afterwards, and it will install the newest version thats available from nvidias site just like doing a normal nvidia driver update not just to out of date manufacturer approved versions. For some reason they just want you to first install it with the manufacturers installer.

Thanks @Krause for your reply. As you can read in the initial post, I already tried that and it did not work. GeForce Experience will only run the same installer which will not install.

@mtimmerm Thats so weird! On a fresh windows install I cant install the drivers from nvidia (same error) but after fully updating the drivers through Lenovo Vantage (which is still the old 388.13) I can then open up Geforce Experience and update to the most current version.

From what I read it has something to do with a Standard driver vs a DHU version (our systems used the DCH variant) and you cant cross install/update from 1 version to the other, but Geforce Experience will properly download and install the correct version.

As you tried you can suppoisedly switch from 1 to the other if you compleatly remove all remenants of the DCH driver with that cleaning tool, but I honestly have no idea if there is any benifit or downside to using the standard or DCH version on our systems, I cant imagine they have 2 seperate branches for no reason.

@ Krause did you mean DCH? If so, that new Windows Driver subsystem (formerly "Modern Drivers") is definitly no fun.

That I do! I have corrected it.

Windows by default installs the DCH version of our drivers (and I think the Lenovo driver is also a DCH driver or it wouldnt of been able to update the Windows installed one), and geforce experience should be able to update from that version to the newest DCH driver (which should have version number parity to the standard one).
