Hi Preyash18! Welcome to our forums community. Sorry for the trouble. Does the computer shut off on its own? What is the temperature of the laptop when it overheats? Does it overheat when opening a particular program or even in idle mode? Try running the update from the Vantage app and install all available updates. Let us know.

Hi, my laptop runs on ~60°C on best performance mode, with spikes up to 98°C. max core freq was ~4GHz, with processor cache freq running ~4Ghz. This is all on idle mode.

On best battery mode, temp runs ~40°C and spikes up to 75°C. max core at ~2GHz, processor cache ~3.3 GHz. Again, on idle mode.

No, my laptop does not shut down on itself but it is worrisome to have a laptop that is not only hot to touch but also experience loud fan noise issues. The laptop is on the table with no ventilation-obstructing objects near it. Even when I use devices to prop the laptop up for better ventilation, the laptop still runs hot.

Just yesterday, 24th Dec 2019, my screen turned RED. It was fine after shutting down the laptop and letting it cool. but red screen after only 4 days of usage upon purchase (just recently) with no heavy software being used yet?? I am an architecture student and I will need to use heavy software very soon. I was using night mode but that's yellow tint, not full-on red tint. I would also like to note that I saw my taskbar being dull in color before the red screen issue.

I have downloaded Vantage and updated the Intel Graphics Driver. Did not update Hotkey Features and BIOS update because there were issues faced by other users.

Research has shown that X1 5th Gen has been recalled for overheating. So what went wrong in X1 Gen 2 and what can Lenovo do to assist me? Sadly, between the red screen issue and the overheating issue, I could only upload one picture so here is the temperature graph of the machine observed in 30 minutes.

I have been trying to contact Lenovo post sales service a lot, but they are not responding me. Lenovo service sucks man.

My laptop overheats even when I am working on PowerPoint.

Have you gone down to their service centre? I have not because it's a public holiday now.

Hi Preyash,

Any news on your issue? I am suffering from the same issue and noticed that my battery only lasts up to 2 hours. Are you experiencing the same? Let me know if you got a solution. Thanks

Re:Overheating issue with extreme x1 gen 2

Hi all,

I have similar problems with my X1 for more than a year now. I use it for software development and virtualization projects.

Problem 1: CPU fans turn on even when the system is not under heavy load. Monitoring CPU temperatures looks like this:

Fan seems to be triggered by the these strange spikes of +/- 10-20 degrees during fractions of second, which don't look real, because if the CPU would warm up and cool back down that fast (fans can't spin up that fast) with just a single core loaded at 0-40% AND with CPU frequency limited to the range 2.2Ghz-3.4Ghz (the max turbo frequency is 4.1Ghz for i7-8750H CPU) it could indicate severe cooling issues or the problems with the temperature sensor. According to the community and youtube videos changing thermal paste sometimes helps (if it's really necessary, Lenovo, pls confirm), but quite often it doesn't help as well according to the community feedback (I haven't tested it).

Some feedback from Lenovo engineering team would be helpful to understand if this temperature graph is as expected, or do I need to contact the service center for motherboard replacement? Is changing thermal paste covered by warranty?

Problem 2: Before CPU reports overheating and starts to thermal-throttle itself the laptop spins up its CPU fans, which produce very annoying high-frequency noise on start, and make working on the laptop a nightmare, because that happens continuously even while you just browse the internet: fans spin up, then down, then up... and the process would never end. Community suggests the removal of mesh from the laptop cover.

What can be done about this?

Thanks in advance.
