Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2

I want to try Windows 8 on my Lenovo x201.  I ran CoreInfo and it reported that the machine has Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2.  However, I cannot find it anywhere in the BIOS setup.

I use BitLocker and it gets very upset if the BIOS settings are changed during boot so they must be turned on and not have Windows 8 turn them on during boot.

Where can I find the settings for Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2?

Re: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2

Those things aren't BIOS settings that can be turned on or off.  They are features of the processor.

What does Security - Memory Protection - Execution Prevention? Doesn't this a NX bit setting?

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is not the same.  See: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh975398.aspx

Then why does: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh975398.aspx

say:

"To align with the requirement that Windows 8 systems must have NX feature and SSE2 instructions support, the Windows 8 kernel is enhanced to check for the presence of these features during initialization. All systems that do not support NX or SSE2 will no longer be able to initialize a Windows 8 kernel. Systems that can disable NX in firmware will have that option overridden, so any misconfigured firmware will not cause boot to fail. "

Re: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2

NX = EVP = XD = XN = DEP

if you see an option to enable data execution prevention (DEP) then your CPU supports what you're referring to as NX.   enabling DEP (if it's not already enabled) is all you need to do for win 8 compatibility with your X201.

Re: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2

I got the same problem with windows 8.
My Cpu (Intel Core i7 2670QM) supports everything needed and the DEP is also activated.
In every forum they say that you have to enable PAE-NX in the BIOS but when i go into the Bios, therese almost NOTHING. This is the poorest Bios I've ever seen. Almost nothing to configure, enable or disable. Except boot order, Intel virtual mashine, admin password.
For my Z570(1024) there's no new BIOS update.

Re: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2

These are feature of the CPU, that's right but Lenovo has disabled these features of the CPU !!
In this poor BIOS you can't do nothing.

LENOVO for those who can't do!!!

I just want to be able to enable/disable all features of my hardware.
I'v bought Windows 8 Pro but Because of Lenovo, i can't install Windows 8 Pro.

This is a shame !!!

LInk to image

* = supported

Re: Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2

Lenovo is not like some other non-professional vendors, on Thinkpad Lenovo tend to enable all possible high-end features available on the CPU, unless you choose to disable them, given that disabling could be practical beneficial in some cases.

To my knowledge, starting from X60, PAE, NX and SSE2 are all enabled features in a Thinkpad, unless your CPU does not support them.
