You are right. It is a USB-A socket. I took photo from a Japanese website before US release. Now I have x1y6 and teared down found the same thing.

Interesting. The usb-c power socket though on the "x1y6" - is it integrated/soldered on the main motherboard? Might the X1 Gen 9 be different?

The current T1n-series models that require up to 100W power all seem to have only USB-C charging. Models that need more than 100W power, i.e. more than the USB-C Power Delivery provides, have the old slim tip connectors for use with more powerful chargers.
