Plug in external analog mic?

2020-10-18, 15:32 PM

Hi,

X1 Carbon 6th Gen. I would like to plug in an external mic preamp with analog output (1/4" mono or XLR). Is there a way to do this? E.g. a cable or adapter that will plug into the combo mic/headphone jack of the laptop?

Thanks!

Bill..

You can probably dig up a Y-adapter that splits out microphone and headphones. Example. Just make sure it works with Lenovo's TRRS pin assignments. From the tip, it's Left audio out, Right audio out, ground, microphone. However, if you're going to the trouble to use a mic processor and balanced audio, why not go with a USB interface designed to handle that? I use a Sure SM5B microphone into a mic processor into a Focusrite Scarlett interface.

Thanks. I will try the Y-adapter for $6. I already have a nice tube mic preamp and would rather not have to shell out $150 for a USB interface.

Best,

The only reason I bring up the interface is because of the frequency response of an audio card designed for unbalanced headset microphones. I can tell you from experience, you may not get the kind of quality you've already put into the audio chain to this point. But you never know, right?
