Poor DPC latency with X1E Gen 3

2021-03-10, 10:16 AM

Hi everyone,

There are quite a few threads on DPC latency issues causing crackles and dropouts when working with real-time audio processing on laptops. However, there is no thread on the new X1 Extreme Gen 3 Thinkpad. Based on my experience, I am assuming that the situation is similar to the previous Gen 2 that one can read about in the forum.

I do have dropouts and it is really quite annoying. With my older Thinkpad, I could pretty much max out the CPU before I ran into any issues. With the X1E, I have crackles already at low CPU loads, and at least a 512ms latency setting on the audio interface is necessary. Considering that the overall CPU power of the X1E is quite good, it is really a shame that I cannot use it for running audio plugins because the machine is so "sensitive".

I ran Latency Mon and the reported values are between 40 and 800mus, WhySoSlow reports likely poor audio performance with a measured value of BIOS interrupts of 376 mus. The DPC latency checker only shows yellow bars with about 1300mus.

I have changed the BIOS settings (Linux vs Windows 10 Power Saving, CPU Throttling on/off), changed the power slider in Windows, and tried the "ultimate power" plan, but for any of these changes, the impact on the values is small, and neither setting makes the problems go away.

Is anyone using the X1E Gen3 for audio and can share some experience?

Hi Lorenzo, The problem with audio crackles at low latency settings (<512mus) was there right from the beginning. It is not recent or appeared after an update.
