my beloved x201 just broke. Now I am thinking of getting a new x-series notebook.
Is it possible (without a reinstall of Windows) to simply put the HDD from my x201 to lets say a x220?`Or a x301?
I am reaaally trying to avoid a windows installation, because I have a perfect setup on this HDD which i do not want to reproduce (and unfortunately do not have backups)
So, is this possible?

It is possible, but it is easier with windows 10 than with windows 7. I'm assuming you have win 7. In any case, I would attach the drive to a machine via USB or something similar and back-up the drive before I did anything. That always gives you the option to get back where you are now. An X301 has very similar hardware and would probably need very little in the way of updates. My guess is that an x220 would probably work, but I would be less sure as you tried newer hardware. My experience is that windows 10 (if that's what you have) will probably work wherever you move it, but you will still need driver updates.

Unless you use identical hardware, you will experience some issues due to the differences between the old and new CPUs, chipset and other differences to the hardware.
