not thinkpads.  you are thinking of the power-on password.

From x1 carbon service manual:

Attention: If the supervisor password has been forgotten and cannot be made available to the service

technician, there is no service procedure to reset the password. The system board must be replaced for

a scheduled fee.

Hi, you can try removing cmos battery and wait 10 mins then put it back but this method sems to only work on some laptops, unless your laptop may have a Bios Reset button that would disconnect the cmos battery so it will reset the password.

BIOS passwords cannot be reset. The "fix" is to replace the motherboard.

Richk thats where you are wrong some laptops can have their bios passwords removed by disconnecting cmos battery for 10-15 mins even my x1 Carbon has a button on inside that's called bios password reset by pressing it the cmos battery becomes disconnected from motherboard so bios can reset itself

@brayanguy & @JakeSully...

The quote from the X1 Carbon HMM provided by richk above also applies to the X140e.

X140e HMM: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x140e_hmm_sp40a26006_01.pdf

bottom of manual page 34. The password section of the manual is the only discussion on this topic allowable in this community.

From the Guidelines: "No posts shall include instructions or directions intended to subvert security measures, including passwords, locking mechanisms, fingerprint scans, etc, or to subvert safety measures.
