[SOLVED] Mobile Broadband hardware not detected in X240

2014-12-22, 10:52 AM

I have a new X240. It has a sim card slot on the right side. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.

it seems that the x240 does not recognize wwan hardware. I can't find it in the device manager. It doesn't connect to any network when I insert a SIM card. Also, no unknown devices show up in the device manager. I installed the following drivers in an attempt to fix the issue:

-Ericsson N5321gw wireless WAN

-Sierra Wireless 7355 - Gobi 5000

... but no success.

I also tried running commands in cmd window to check the status of the wwan:

-netsh mbn sh int

-netsh mbn sh cap int=*

... but I always get the same message:

"Mobile Broadband Service (wwansvc) is not running"

I am starting to think that having a sim card slot does not neccessarily mean that the x240 is Mobile Broadband capable.

Any suggestion?

It is only WWAN operable if it has a WWAN car installed.  Does your X240 have a WWAN card installed?

Right. I think that all models have the SIM slot but only some of them are equipped with WWAN antenna and WWAN modem. Check PSREF http://psref.lenovo.com/ for detailed information as it is the most reliable source (descriptions on web shops are sometimes incorrect).

Your model might be "WWAN ready" (has WWAN antennas, but no modem), you have to buy and install the WWAN modem separately. I strongly recommend to buy Sierra Wireless over Ericsson modem. The EM7345 http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd031021 is the most versatile solution for Europe region.

You are both right.

I unscrewed and removed the back cover of my x240 to find out that there is no wwan card in the place where it should have been.

(see diagram on page 9 -> http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/user_guides/x240_ug_en.pdf )

So yes: even if there is a SIM card slot, it doesn't mean that the thinkpad has a wwan modem.

I thank you both for the quick reply
