SSD FW update utility readme explanation

2020-02-15, 18:34 PM

Hello,

I don't fully understand the readme explanations for the NVMe Solid State Drive Firmware Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad, and have some questions.

1- The README file has several instances of statements like this:

README file is https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/fwnva36en.txt

- Added support for following systems:
                    ThinkPad E490s
                    ThinkPad P53s
                    ThinkPad T490, T490s, T590
                    ThinkPad X390, X390 Yoga
                    ThinkPad S3-490

   Model Firmware
   ---------------- ----------------------
   [Samsung]
   MZVLB256 4M2QEXH7
   MZVLB512 4M2QEXF7
   MZVLB1T0 4M2QEXF7
   MZVLB2T0 3M2QEXG7

   Model Firmware
   ---------------- ----------------------
   [Toshiba]
   KBG30ZMT128G 108
   KBG30ZMT256G 108
   KBG30ZMT512G 108

Since this update is for a SSD, why is there a reference to multiple SSDs and multiple Thinkpad models.

2- How do I know which FW revisions are applicable to a particular SSD model and Thinkpad combo? As it seems to me that some revisions are not applicable to every device.

3- To update the SSD FW, is this utility what I need to download and run? Is it better to let Lenovo Vantage do the SSD FW update than manually run this file?

4- Would it be possible to run a previous version of this SSD FW utility on a more recent revision of the SSD FW, in order to revert back to an older version of the SSD FW?

5- Has anyone experienced a slow Thinkpad or unusual things (like some flickering or stuttering in browsers and other applications) after a successful SSD FW done by Lenovo Vantage?

6- The severity of the SSD FW update is listed as Critical. Is it?

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-6th-gen-type-20kh-20kg/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Storage

Thanks.

ThinkPad uses SSDs from several suppliers (Samsung, Toshiba, Intel, UMIS, Sandisk, etc) and this firmware update utility contains the latest versions for all of them.  I'll try to answer your questions.

1.  This specific utility is for NVMe SSD from multiple suppliers.  The tool is applicable to all ThinkPads that shipped with a NVMe SSD (this means, many models going back years)

2.  The tool itself sorts out whether there is an update for the specific SSD that is in a specific ThinkPad

3.  It's the same tool, whether you run it yourself or let Vantage download and run it for you

4.  This tool cannot be used to downgrade firmware

5.  I have not heard these kinds of problems caused by SSD firmware updates

6.  Some of the suppliers latest firmware versions contained within FWNVA36 fix critical issues, that's why the package is marked as "critical"
