SSD Recommendation for a X220

2012-07-01, 19:24 PM

Hi all,

I am contemplating buying a X220 but I had rather not go with the options Lenovo is giving me (based on another question I asked in this forum).

Which are some of the best SSDs available that can fit in the Lenovo X220? I am not sure what size can it adapt to. Also, where can I find such information in future (which laptop supports which SSD)?

Intel 520, Samsung 830 and Crucial M4. But they may need some modification to fit in the hdd bay.

All good choices. The issue is the thickness of the drive. The standard 2.5" drive is 9.5mm thick. Some recent notebooks have thinner drive bays that will only accommodate newer 7mm drives. I don't know if the X220 is one of them. An easy way to tell is to pull out the HD from the drive bay and measure its thickness.

I don't know about Intel and Samsung, but Crucial now sells the M4 in both thicknesses. For instance in a 256GB drive model CT256M4SSD2 is 9.5mm and CT256M4SSD1 is 7mm.

There has been some discussion that even 9.5mm drives are really 7mm drives with a 2.5mm spacer. Some people have removed the spacer and successfully installed an original 9.5mm drive in a 7mm bay. There's some disagreement about whether this voids the warranty so, if your system requires 7mm I'd look for a drive that's 7mm out of the box.

X220 uses 7 mm drives, but most of the mentioned SSD can be modded easily to fit in the X220.

A 7mm height drive is required.  9.5mm height will NOT fit!

Thanks for your replies everyone; there's some excellent advise in this forum.

The restriction of 7mm is kinda bad because I was looking to spend extra $ on a high-end SSD. So which other series supports 9mm (or 9.5mm) -- the T420 perhaps?

I had rather not live with the amibguity of voiding the warranty and forcing a 9.5mm in a 7mm casing. I am picky about these things :)

So get a 7mm SSD. Samsung 830 is 7mm. Crucial, Intel and Plextor also make 7mm models.

Re: SSD Recommendation for a X220

I just installed a Samsung 830 256GB.  I cloned the HDD to the SSD with a Rosewill USB adapter kit.  I then installed the software that came with the Samsung, which suggested disabling certain features (prefetch, etc.).  I followed recommendations and I now have enough room for my purposes.

My next modification will be to install a mSATA drive for backup.  But that's for another thread.
