SSD or SSH on Thinkpad X220?

Hi all,

I get a Thinkpad X220 and I would like to change the harddrive. I was thinking about a SSD or SSHD with capacity of 500 Go.

Is it possible, does anybody tried it?

Have you got references SSD or SSHD to give me?

Did I have any other things to do if I change it?

Do you think that these models can be used?

  • Seagate ST500LM000 2.5 " 500 Go serial_ata150 5400 trs/min
  • Seagate ST1000LM014 Laptop SSHD 2,5" SATA III 1 To
  • Crucial CT512M550SSD1 M550 Disque Flash SSD interne 2,5" SATA III 512 Go
  • Samsung MZ-7TE500BW SSD interne Série 840 EVO BASIC 2,5" 500 Go SATA Gris

One other question concerning the RAM, what is the maximum possible, and is there any model restriction?

Thanks, regards, Oni45

Re: SSD or SSH on Thinkpad X220?

Hi,

1. use any drive you want - 2.5", sata II/III (x220 main drive bay utilizes sata III interface), 7 (!) mm high in order to fit into the drive bay with rubber rails. I didn't use hybrid drives but know successfull installation examples of such drives.

In case of using SSD remove a couple sw on the laptop - Lenovo Airbag Protection and RapidBoot.

2. x220 works with 2x8 gb (16 in total), PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3, CL9, non-parity, 204-pin SO-DIMM sticks. But it works with PC3-12800 1600MHz memory type too, 2x8 gb (if BIOS version is priore of 1.29)

T470p | X1 Carbon Gen3 | Miix 2 10" | Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android) + BT Keyboard
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 Wireless Router, HDD 1 TB, BT Speaker, Power Bank, Mobile Projector

Do it well, worse becomes itself

Re: SSD or SSH on Thinkpad X220?

Hi,

Thank you for your quick answer!

I order that:
Komputerbay 16 Go (2x 8Go) PC3-10600 1333 SODIMM 204-10666
And for the hard-drive:
Seagate Momentus internal hard drive 2,5" 500 Go SATA II
Do you think it will be OK? I receveid my laptop without hard-drive.

Did I have to remove a couple sw on the laptop - Lenovo Airbag Protection and RapidBoot?
If yes, how to do it?

Thanks for your help, oni

Re: SSD or SSH on Thinkpad X220?

Hi,

I don't know anything about Komputerbay, sorry.
Regarding the drive, presently it's a time to use SSD if you don't need extra storage. You'll see the perfomance will increase dramatically.

Do not remove (disable) Airbag application if you are using HDD, it's a helpful app. Just tune the sensor sensitivity in the app.

RapidBoot is a good idea but has bad realization. So stop and disable its HyperW7Svc service.

Re: SSD or SSH on Thinkpad X220?

Hi all,

As I said, I buy that:

  • Komputerbay 16 Go (2x 8Go) PC3-10600 1333 SODIMM 204-10666

And for the hard-drive:

  • Seagate Momentus internal hard drive 2,5" 500 Go SATA II

I installed it on my Thinkpad X220, and everything works perfectly. I installed Windows 7 64 bits and Linux Mint 17 64 bits and everything works perfect.
