For about a year I have an X1 Gen4, and I am starting to see some scratches on the screen. To me it seems like they are caused by the keys. Is this normal?

Thank you for sharing the pic of the issue, suggest you to clean the keypad frequently, this will not damage the screen. This is due to the dust on the keypad.

I am sorry, but you are wrong.
I am cleaning my screen regularly, and this issue is definitely no dirt. I tried cleaning it with a moist soft cloth, without success.
If I slide with my finger over it, I can definitely feel the scratched surface.

You can't be serious??!!
This ain't a cheapo Laptop which I got from some used-warez-reseller for some change.
I expect Lenovo to replace the screen under warranty, as this seems to me as a production or construction error. And this is a notebook that sells under "MIL-STD-810G certified". I expect it to behave that way (and I actually carry it in my very clean bag, and handle it very carefully).
I will however, after the screen gets replaced, get a screen protector, to avoid further such problems, although it shouldn't be needed.

Actually I'm very sad to hear about this issue.
For me , I can't do anything than these.
Cause its already were there.
The only way to apply Matt screen protector will help.
Cause can't spot easily, the Matt screen protector will let it more invisible.
