Severe bug w/ X1E Gen1 webcam driver update. Rollback fixes it but Lenovo Vantage keeps updating it.

2020-12-05, 21:59 PM

This driver update for the integrated webcam in my X1E Gen1 (20MF000BUS) is buggy.

Integrated Camera Driver for Realtek(Windows 10 Version 1709 or Later) - 10 [64] - 10.0.19041.20159
Instalado correctamente: 5/12/2020 18:49

With this driver, the webcam image lags several seconds (as in: I raise my hand and the screen takes 3-5 seconds to show it). Also it looks like if it's in a low framerate besides lagging.

The problem is solved when I roll back the driver to this version on Windows' Device Manager:

Version: 10.0.17763.20078. Date: 9/1/2019.

Problem: Vantage keeps updating the driver without asking first. So sometimes I log in to a Zoom video call and find my webcam unusable.

This is unacceptable for premium hardware.

Thanks.

This is with both Auto Update options in Vantage turned off ???

I don't want to block ALL updates!

Up to you: turn off automatic updates for now or leave them on and deal with the issue...

Auto off doesn't mean you won't get updates - you just get to choose when to check and what to accept, until a further updated driver sorts things.

Personally I do not like auto updates of any kind, but whatever floats your boat,

Z.

Thanks. You're right. I don't like it because it leads me to procrastinate on updates, but I'll change it.

Good day.

Personally, I turn off automatic updates everywhere I can, anywhere I can.

Z's advice is solid. You can turn off automatic updates in Vantage, and still do checks for available updates. Then, you can easily pick when, and how, to do them.

Since you've stated that you'll be following his advice, it would be helpful if you'd mark his post as the solution to your thread.

Thanks, and regards.

Disabling automatic updates does resolve the problem of having the new(buggy) driver installed without warning.

But there's still the issue of the buggy driver.  I've seen a similar issue on a x1 yoga 3rd edition.  Is this not the correct forum/place to report that buggy driver?

I believe there's a Feedback link on specific driver pages for each model. You could visit the driver page and submit your details with respect to the cam driver.

Within this community, the board to communicate issues members find with the Support pages, and their content, is: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Feedback-on-the-support-site/bd-p/Customer_Feedback

Regards.

Where? Look, I don't work for Lenovo for QA, and I'm not inclined to giving away my time for free. The link you've provided isn't for providing feedback on drivers. Now I have to spend my time hunting for a driver feedback page within the website? When the product page links to this forum? Are you for real? I won't mark as resolved because the main issue isn't resolved, as cpschultz points out, and because just adding manual updating chores that take up my time isn't an acceptable solution. And I'm fed up with the shoddyness of the drivers in this supposedly premium product (I'm looking at you, fingerprint scanner).
