Should I purchase X220i or not?

2011-06-03, 14:05 PM

Hi Internet.

This is my very first post here so be nice.

I'm a college student(information technology) and currently battling whether to purchase Thinkpad X220i or Thinkpad Edge 13. I have a powerful desktop at home so I don't need a superfast laptop.

Here are the specs for both:

X220i

Intel Core vPro i3-2310M 2.1GHz L3 3M, 1333MHz Frontside Bus

12.5" (317.5mm) HD (1366x768) TFT color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 200 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 300:1 contrast ratio

4096MB PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz

320GB 5400

Intel HD Graphics 3000

No Operating System

3 year warranty

price 745 euros(with student discount)

Edge 13

Intel Core i3-380UM 1.33 GHz

13.3" (338mm) HD (1366x768) color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 200 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 400:1 contrast ratio

4096 MB

500GB 5400

Intel HD

3G

Win7 64

1 year warranty

price 670 euros(-50 eur cashback)

The laptop should be powerful enough to survive these:

light Photoshop(CS5) usage

programming(eclipse etc)

normal Office programs

sql

YouTube HD videos

playing .mkv and other hd video files

Also it should have efficient battery life. Personally, I prefer the look of the Edges chiclet keyboard. X220i has a fingerprint reader which is naturally a pleasant surprise. If I want to buy the X220i with that price I'll have to order it from Germany( I live in Northern Europe).

There's been some issues with the X220/i-models. CPU throttling, touchpad jumpiness, fans always on, 50Hz refresh rate switching issues etc.

My main question to you is, are those issues severe enough to justify the purchase of Edge 13 instead of X220i? Also, for my needs, which one would you choose? I want my laptop to be as quiet as possible so any whining or fan noise is out of the question. Again, as I'm a student I don't have a lot of money to spend so I want to make sure I don't buy crap.

This is rather urgent so I need some opinions soon.

Thank you very much in advance!

The x220i is something you should consider, as this has full magnesium alloy bottom chassis which is lot tougher than the edge 13. Also the x220i is the current gen laptop with a cad approved integrated graphics card.

Oh I have considered it, a lot!

I'm just worried about those multiple issues. After all there is a price difference of about 130 euros.

Why don't you wait a week or two and see if the key issues - the cpu throttling and possibly the fan pulsing - are sorted out? I'm fairly confident they're high on the engineers' agendas to solve...

A week is something I can do but not much longer.

Fan noise however sounds like a hardware issue and even if Lenovo decides to ship new laptops with different fans I doubt that would help me out as I won't be ordering this straight from Lenovo. Oh well I guess I'll just have to wait... :(

as long as you have warranty coverage in Finland then i think you could this issue resolved if it is indeed a hardware issue.

745 dollar euro for a X220i is very good price, especially considering the EU pricing is usually lot more than US.

It comes with a 3 year international warranty and 1 year for the battery. I assume that means I have a full warranty also here in Finland?

It's 745 euros incl. Finnish keyboard and delivery but as mentioned above it does not include operating system. I agree it's rather cheap as this same unit costs here around 1100 euros with Win 7 preinstalled.

I'm just overly worried(as always). Too many issues. :)

what is the model number of this X220i?

You can check for international warranty from this website. You can get an official Win 7 OS from ebay fairly cheaply.

While good things come to those whom wait, but for those procrastinate too much opposite can be true.

Is this the number? 4290W1A

I can get a win7 pro 64 free from my school. :)

it is covered in finland, and in pretty much all the places where Lenovo sells a Thinkpad.

Go into the above link that i have given, click on thinkpad and then type in 4290. This will show all the places where the machine will be covered.

The price you are paying is quite low for those sold in Europe.

I definitely recommend the X220i.
