Should PC2-6400S memory run in my X61 OK?

2015-07-10, 20:00 PM

I have an X61 currently running 2 gig of memory via 2x 1G DDR2 PC2-5300 modules.

As I want to upgrade to 4 gig, I recently bought 2x modules with the label: “2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666-12-E3”. When I install these modules, the laptop fails to boot. I hear a few bleeps from the machine and that’s it.

What’s the problem here - have I got the wrong memory modules? The X61 has a T7300 2.0 GHz processor if it helps.

Many thanks

Hi Sinbad1900,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

The configuration of the RAM is different what you have purchased; you have to go for 200pin PC2-5300 Non-Parity (NP) Double Data Rate Two (DDR2) only. Both the specification are different hence your laptop fails to boot.

Please click the below link for detailed specification.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Which brand are those modules? ThinkPads normally don't like no-name brands (like many sold in Ebay) or cheaper lines like "Value RAM" from Kingston or "Value Select" from Corsair.

Generally speaking DDR2-6400 should work. I have a couple of X61s using Kingston Hyper-X modules and Elpida Modules with no problem whatsoever. Same goes for several T61 models I have (same generation as your X61s)

Hi Tasurinchi,

The modules are Samsung - the label on them matches states "M470T5663QZ3" which I can find on this page

What do you think? Could it be a BIOS issue of some sort?

The beeps you hear, are they following a pattern like 1-3-3-1?

If yes it could be the RAM is defective...

Which BIOS version do you have?

Just checked the bios:

Bios version is 2.16 (7NETB6WW)

Bios date is 2008-07-01

Any clues here?

Latest version is 2.22, while the change logs don't mention any improvements toward RAM it does add some features like Windows 7 support: Source: click me!

Any chance that you can test the RAM in another Laptop? Can you confirm the series of beeps I posted above? If it's 1-3-3-1 (one short, three long, three long and one short beep) it's most probably a toasted RAM (or defective mainboard but your X61 works fine with the old RAM, right?)

Sorry for the delay in coming back - work got in the way.

I experimented with putting just the one module in and sure enough, got the 1-3-3-1 beeps.

Took that module out and placed it in the other socket - but no bleeps and no boot up.

Tried both steps above with the other module - but no bleeps and no boot up.

Finally tried both modules and no bleeps nor boot up.

When I initially tried both modules when I first bought the modules, I did get the bleeps but did not note down the frequency.

I guess both modules are no good....

Regards

Paul

Yes, I guess so. Hopefully you can return them without any problem
