Still waiting for the Windows 10, Version 2004 update on my Thinkpad X380 Yoga

2020-09-27, 9:38 AM

It's end of September 2020 and Windows Update still indicates that my computer is not ready to get the 2004 version update from May 2020!

I ran the Lenovo Vantage several times and my X380 Yoga is up-to-date with all critical and recommended updates.

Am I the only one in this situation? What do I need to do to get this Windows update eventually available?

No, you are not the only one in this situation.  I have an X1 Yoga 2nd Gen and it, too, is still blocked from the 2004 update.  In my case, I believe the reason is because my machine uses a Conexant audio driver and Microsoft reports that it is still investigating problems with Conexant audio drivers.  My Conexant driver version is within the version range identified by Microsoft as having problems.  So, check your audio driver.  If you have a Conexant driver, that's could be why you are blocked.

Thanks a lot LSR19, it might indeed be the issue, although the version number for my Conexant audio driver is now 8.66.89.50 and Microsoft confirmed an issue for versions up to 8.66.89.00 (seen on https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-information/status-windows-10-2004#377msgdesc). Is your laptop running same driver version?

My machine just downloaded a "critical" Conexant audio driver update version 8.66.89.59. That, too, is beyond the highest version 8.66.89.00 identified by Microsoft as a problem blocking the 2004 update. I had zero hopes that this update would do anything for the problem, and unfortunately I was right. My 2nd gen Yoga still blocks the 2004 update. I have no idea why at this point, especially because the earlier driver update was released specifically to resolve the blocking issue - which it didn't. Frustration grows. Might be time for a new machine ....

Both the X380 Yoga and X1 Yoga Gen 2 are tested for Windows 10 Version 2004. I just updated my X1Y2 manually using the Windows 10 Update Assistant. It was not offering up the update automatically so I did it manually. Whether the upgrade is offered up automatically depends on Microsoft, using some AI.

If the manual upgrade doesn't work it should give you some diagnostic information about what is specifically holding it back. Examples include incompatible items like Trend Micro, or if you are on a domain and the upgrade is held back by the admins, or if there is a group policy set, or if updates are paused some other way.

Hope this helps!

Hmm, so ignore the advice that Microsoft has on the page about not using any means other than the automatic Windows Update. Have you faced any issues afterwards?

Thanks!  Does your machine have the allegedly offending Conexant drivers?  And if so, when you manually updated your X1Y2 machine to 2004 did you experience any problems during or after?  If you have the Conexant drivers but the manual update worked for you, I'll give it a try and report back what happens.

My machine has Conexant audio drivers, whatever Vantage installed, no issues (used a bit every day but not my main driver).

Thanks for the tip, Bananaman!  I just manually installed the 20H2 update, and all works well.  I think I know why my machine would not automatically update even though my Conexant driver - the driver that MS said would block the update - was beyond the version MS identified as causing a problem.  I believe Microsoft's blocking AI was not recognizing that my Conexant driver was beyond the problem version, and so just continued to block.  I say this because two driver versions ago, the then updated driver Readme file from Lenovo said the updated driver was to resolve a Windows 10 update blocking issue.  Yet, my machine was still blocked.  Then I received another driver update a few days later that was supposed to resolve other (non-Windows) issues.  So it seems logical to lay the blame for the continued blocking on Microsoft, not Lenovo's, doorstep.  My machine was ready to go, but MS still said "not yet."  In any event, all is well now thanks to your post.  Kudos to you.
