Think X1 Carbon ports not supporting USB 2.0 printer

I recently purchased a gen4 Carbon for my mother, who is 3k miles away and very computer illiterate. I'm unable to debug onsite, so would like some clarification. She has an older printer (HP 1102 laserjet) that she tried plugging into her carbon via USB, but will not print. going into printer settings and running the troubleshooter, it states that this is not a USB3.0 device and might not be supported. my understanding is that USB3.0 should be backwards compatible. is there something that must be enabled (such as a legacy mode) to allow her to use her printer? what else could be causing the issue?

usb3 is certainly compatible with usb2.

I have always had a terrible time getting older hp printers to work.  you might try tiis driver.
