ThinkPad WWAN Upgradable (model 20HN002VUK)

2017-11-09, 20:29 PM

Hi

I recently purchased this prodct.  I need to know what is required to upgrade it for WWAN use (specification states it is upgradable).

I know I will need the 4G/Sierra module, however does it come with the antenna already installed?

What about the SIM connection/carrier unit?

Would like some insight before removing the cover.

Thanks in advance.

Hi _BM_,

Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

According to MTM, 20HN002VUK laptop is WWAN ready as it has preinstalled WWAN Antenna with it

It supports Micro-SIM card with the carriers of AT&T and Verizon (source)

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

Thanks for the input.  I removed the back cover and yes, the cables for the antennae are there.

However, I still can't see how the SIM will be mounted.  I am awaiting the delivery of the module, so I will be able to check again then.

Please have a look on this Removing the micro-SIM-card tray, page 64 of the HMM of ThinkPad X270.

Ok, so looks like the SIM socket is there.

My next problem is the module.  I purchased

4XC0L59128 TP SIERRA WIRELESS EM7455

FRU 00JT542

but this has not been recoginsed in Device Manager.

Is this the correct module?

That module is the for older Systems with Skylake processors it will not work with Kabylake processors. You will need either FRU 01AX746 or FRU 01AX748 (source)

The built-in wwan cards approved to use with your P51s:
Sierra Wireless EM7455 - Lenovo service p/n (FRU) 01AX748 or 01AX746
Fobocom 831EAU - FRU 01AX753

If your location is Ghana more suitable modem is em7455 since it supports wider range of the LTE frequency bands the operators in Ghana operate in. Especially if you choose Blu Telecom. Another reason is em7455' higher reliability according to the customers feedbacks.

IIRC since the 3g Gobi modems generation, Lenovo doesn't lock its built-in wwan modems for certain regions and cellular operators. There just were specific series of the 1st generations LTE modems mc77xx suitable for North America (2 models) and rest areas (1 model). Present wwan modems, in most cases, are worldwide applicable, but of course no one modem is able to support all technologies, all frequency bands, in all regions. So, there are different modems.

Both MTN and Vodafone LTE networks are supported by both modems I've listed above. Note, both operators have very poor frequency resource for LTE service in Ghana, 10 Mhz in B20 Band (800 Mhz), so, maximum DL speed their LTE networks are able to provide is 36.7 or 75 mbps, depending on the networks settings, in theory.
