ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 BIOS Update v1.34 TCO Logo

2020-08-23, 1:14 AM

I just updated to the 1.34 bios for my X1E2 and now there is an ugly TCO logo on the bottom right corner of the bootscreen.

I may just be nitpicking, but why did Lenovo have to ruin the clean boot screen? They have a special options just to display regulatory info when you go into startup options, why couldn't the TCO logo only be placed there?

I didn't notice, but this is mentioned in the 1.34 change log: "- Support for TCO Certified Logo shown on POST screen."

I would avoid this BIOS update, as also mentioned in the change log that downgrades are not possible anymore: "(Note) If the UEFI BIOS has been updated to version 1.34 or higher, it is no longer able to roll back to the version before 1.34 for boot problem prevention."

I find this new logo terrible, even more so when considering it was added to a high end business machine. Why on earth would I want to see the TCO certification logo every time I turn my computer on?

If there is anything I could not care less is this certification. This should be on the last page of the manual, not the boot screen.

What is next? FCC, UL, Intel, WiFi, IEEE, Thunderbolt and USB logos on the startup?

Come on, please remove this from the boot screen and refrain from adding any other logos. My boot screen is no place for this.

Agree its ugly and should be removed. is it a big deal, no -- but it should be removed and chuck it in the bios page somewhere if it 'has' to be displayed

Yeah I just noticed this too. The logo is pretty out of place on the otherwise clean boot screen. It would be great to have a BIOS option to hide it, or just put the regulatory information in the BIOS to begin with.

I feed exactly the same way. I have a newly purchased X1 Yoga Gen 5. I felt strongly enough that I was going to return the laptop after this logo was added to the boot screen so I could reconsider my options. Unfortunately, my 30 day return window expired two days prior to the BIOS being released.

Ah...  the decade of corporative virtue signaling,  isn't it?  No pun intended, is good to see that you guys are 'promoting an environmentally and socially responsible product life cycle'.

The placing of the logo is perhaps the most comical/absurd thing I can find about this odd addition.

A way to disable the TCO logo, from BIOS settings would be HIGHLY appreciated.

This nonsense is apparently due to the inflated ego of TCO:

using-the-tco-certified-brand.pdf

They force certified products to do their branding by:

1. During the startup of the product:
The logo must cover at least 1% of the screen but the text
“certified” in the logo must be legible. The logo must be in color,
black, or white and must automatically (without the need of
interaction) appear at system start-up, and must be displayed for
a minimum of 0,5 seconds.

There is another more palatable option though:

3. TCO Certified logo as a part of the product picture
The TCO Certified logo is shown on the first product picture
where the product is marketed on the brand owners web site. In
the product specification on this page, TCO Certified is also listed
with a link to the “information to end-user document” which is
the document required under mandate 1.1 point 1.

Lenovo, why don't you just stick their logo on a product picture and be done with it? We don't want their self-serving ugly logo on our actual beloved Thinkpads.
