ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 - Screw speification

2020-02-19, 17:57 PM

I want to upgrade RAM and SSD in my recently purchased Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 laptop. I would like to know the specification of the screw driver to purchase to be able to unscrew the screws in the back panel and also any screws inside for this upgrade.

Appreciate any helpful information in this regard.

Hi LenovoUser2020,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking with the hardware manual for X1 Extreme Gen 2 do not show specific screw driver recommended for this but instead the screw type list which you can reference the screwdriver to use.

Screw kit
• M2.0 x L2.5, flat, black (10)
• M2.0 x L2, silver (10)
• M2.5 x L5, nylon BZ (10)
• M2.0 x L3.5, nylon NI (20)
• M2.0 x L7 (10)
• M2.0 x L5, flat head, BK (10)
• WAF, M2.0 x L4, (10)
• M2.5 x L2.5 (10)
• M1.2 x L1.8 (80)

On this link is also the disassembly video that you can review.

This will help you remove the botom cover along with the 7 screws using a Philip screw driver. Same goes with the SSD comparing notes from the manual.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Would there be a way to figure out which of those screws are the ones that hold the bottom cover in place on the X1E Gen 2?  I am considering buying a metric tap of the appropriate size, and filling the hole in the palmrest at the front edge with epoxy and drilling/tapping for the screw.  I just want to know which size tap to order. (M2.0 or 2.5).  Also need to figure out the thread pitch.

Thanks

Well, answering my own question - I took mine apart and measuring the screws seems to indicate that they are M2.  I ended up requesting a replacement bottom cover under warranty in the hope that a new screw 'may' solve the issue.  I pulled a different screw from another location on the cover and tried it in the hole without the cover, and it actually did seem to grab the threads and would tighten, but I didn't dare go beyond "snug".  It seems to me that the screw is too short to reach the hole very well.

I may try using the "wrong" screw from another location in the new cover in this front location and see if that helps (before I attempt an epoxy/re-tapping operation).
