ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 shutting down (crashing) every night

2021-04-13, 15:23 PM

Every morning I have to power the laptop on because it shuts down (crashes) every night.

This is what the event log shows: "The previous system shutdown at 1:08:43 AM on ‎4/‎13/‎2021 was unexpected."

When I check to see what happened at 1:08am I see this: "7025 - Dump after return from D3 before cmd "

Hello mario_webobj,

Greetings

Did you made any changes on the computer?
I suggest that you update the drivers and BIOS thru the support site.
Also under BIOS, load the default settings then save before exiting.

Then run the system file checker, kindly follow the steps from Microsoft link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files-79aa86cb-ca52-166a-92a3-966e85d4094e

Hope this helps

Regards,

Hi Lorenzo_Lenovo,

The only update that occurred was a Windows update. The crash started happening a day or 2 after that.

How is this supposed to work if the Windows update overwrites the Lenovo update? Is this issue going to keep happening?

Also - I have the Vantage app but it seems to be useless. How come it cannot detect the udpates that you are asking me to install? Why do I need to update BIOS when Vantage says everything is fine and no updates are needed?

Hi Lorenzo_Lenovo,

I have a couple of questions:

1) Can you please clarify what specifically I need to do when I go to the support site ?  When I go to the support site, this is what I see and then when I click on "drivers & software" on the left menu the automatic scan fails every time. So then when I select "manual update" it brings up a ton of sections and drivers. It would be very hard and time consuming to click each section and update the drivers:

2) When you say "Also under BIOS, load the default settings then save before exiting." - Where/how do I do this? Do do it before updating the drivers & BIOS?

Good day.

It is not uncommon for Vantage to be delayed a bit in showing new updates. The support page is the best place to see the latest available drivers, earliest.

Regards.

Hi Lorenzo_Lenovo,

Can you please advise on this post re. the 2 questions above?

It crashed again this morning at 4am! with 2 different errors:

"The previous system shutdown at 4:07:06 AM on ‎4/‎14/‎2021 was unexpected."

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Dear customer,

I don't know how do you leave your X1 Extreme Gen 3 system at night, but I assume you always attach your system to Docking and Lid Close over night.

One of my suspect to trigger your unexpected shutdown event is Smart Standby setting in Lenovo Vantage.  If this feature is enabled, it wakes the system from suspend (modern standby) and try to enter hibernation at late night, then wake the system from hibernation early in the morning.

Please visit Lenovo Vantage -> Devices -> Power -> Smart Standby, if it is enabled, try to set disable to see what will happen next morning.

Hi Rydeen

So now I'm REALLY confused!

There is no "smart standy" in Vantage. See screen shots.

IN Windows, there is no "slider" and as you can see the "notifications" switch is disabled.

Dear customer,

strange.. X1 Extreme Gen 3 supports Modern Standby so that I thoukght Smart Standby is installed on Lenovo Vantage.

Anyway, if the smart standby is not there, remainig suspect is BSOD occurd on ytour system.  I think you have memory.dmp file yunder C:\Windows folder and file timestamp match with your last unexpected shutdown event, please share the dump file to me ( Please use private message to contact me and use OneDriver or public FileShare site for dump file)

As for Battery "gray out" symptom on Windows setting, that will happen when you attach AC adapter.
