ThinkPad X1 Extreme Nvidia 1050 Drivers

2019-01-27, 1:35 AM

Just fired up my new X1 Extreme and I'm having an issue getting drivers for the NVIDIA 1050.  I can only download drivers from Lenovo and not NVIDIA?

I need minimum driver 416.94 but I can only get 416.16 from lenovo.  I've tried geforce experience but it says I have the latest driver (416.16).  Anyone have away around this?

Thanks!

What a pain.  I've downloaded the driver from NVIDIA that I need and I can't install it on this machine.  I went to device managment and tried updating the driver that way and I get a message stating something about "windows says you have the best driver"...what a pain.

Try force-feeding the driver. Where it asks "I have a disk", choose that option and point to where you have the new driver files stored. I suggest you make a restore point just in case this newer driver doesn't work as expected.

Try updating the driver via the "Geforce Experience" application.

This worked for me.

I see a lot of people saying the same thing but when I go to GeForce Experience it just has the driver that is currently on my machine and says that its up to date.  Even if I remove the driver and an old one is present it still says I have the latest driver.  lol.

I contacted lenovo support and did a pc share with them.  They ran lenovo vantage then told me they couldn't do anything.  What a waste of time.

This solution from an X1 Extreme user proved to be useful for me, the steps can be followed on any machine. I use a P1 myself.

I managed to get it working thanks to Greybear's answer on this post. In short:

  • download the required (latest) graphics drivers for both the internal and the external graphics adapter
  • download DDU
  • start windows in safe mode
  • start DDU and remove all Intel and NVIDIA drivers
  • start windows normally
  • disconnect internet
  • install Intel and desired NVIDIA drivers
  • reconnect internet
