Re:ThinkPad X1 Gen 8 heating problems

So okay, regarding disk writing and log file C:Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\UdeTrc.etl.xxx.

What I have done to solve this one:

1. Open "Computer Management"

2. Select "Performance"

3. Select "Data Collector Sets"

4. Select "Startup Event Trace Sessions"

5. In list find "Ude"

6. Open "Ude" and select "Trace Session" tab.

7. Uncheck "Enabled" then push Apply and restart your laptop.

Now you can try to check disk usage and there is no more log writing in UdeTrc.etl.xxx file :) I think it is somehow connected to thunderbolt or any device that is failing.

Thanks tomburo for this workaround !

That's funny, I found the same solution 2 hours ago, but through the registry. I was just waiting to confirm it works before sharing it, but you were faster than me !

Anyway, I went to regedit, key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\Autologger\Ude, and you must change the Start value from 1 to 0.

To be clear, the trick only "solves" the disk writing issue, but it's better than nothing.

When powered through the USB-C docking station or the 65W power adaptor, the CPU stays almost all the time in turbo mode, even with <5% CPU occupation, so the fan is loud as hell.

(On battery, because the CPU frequency is drastically reduced, the fan is quiet as it should be.)

As soon as a device is disabled in device manager, the CPU frequency drops and the fan is quiet.

Regarding fans and CPU in turbo mode ;) this helped me untill problems with drivers will be solved. In Control Panel, advanced power options, set Maximum processor state: On battery - 75% (your choise) Pugged in - 95% (you can try just 99%)

Yep, you're right.

But these settings are no longer available thanks to the Windows 10 2004 update :D

And obviously, the 10 days grace period to rollback to 1909 is over...

Re:ThinkPad X1 Gen 8 heating problems

I provided info few posts ago.

What I have done in Windows registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\bc5038f7-23e0-4960-96da-33abaf5935ec]

Changed "Attributes" value from dword:00000000 to dword:00000002. If there is no "Attributes" just create new one DWORD :) with name "Attributes" and define value 2.

Then in advanced power options I have ability to change "Processor power management" options.

Hi,

2 months later nothing changed, same issues, same unacceptable tricks to have a usable device.

Still no words from Lenovo, really nice.

BTW, thanks @tomburo for the reminder about the registry modification to have the CPU power profiles back, even if we lose lots of power for heavy tasks...

You are right, it is really unacceptable. The CPU limitation trick and the Ude log deactivation makes at least the laptop usable and quiet, but this is not a solution, just a workaround.

I own my 2x Yoga 5th gen for 3 months now, and none of these issues are fixed. I thought I was buying a professional laptop, I am disappointed.

I can only recommend to NOT BUY these devices.

In case you missed it there is a driver update available that fixes the error messages shown in event viewer. See this post.

Hi,

A driver update for the WWAN Adapter Fibocom L850 (installed on my X1) is available in Lenovo Vantage. Once updated, it seems the issue with the Turbo mode is fixed when the laptop is AC powered.

For the record, this update reactivates the logging of Ude events previously disabled to avoid the heavy disk writing.

If you have this WWAN adapter installed, it's worth a try...
