ThinkPad Yoga X1 1st and 3rd gens suddenly running hot

2019-10-17, 19:23 PM

Help! Not sure what might have changed a few weeks ago, but I've noticed that both my laptops have started running too hot--they jump up to 100% use constantly even when I have nothing open, and the fans are spinning too hard. It seems the CPUs are getting hot, then throttling down, which is affecting all kinds of performance.

I've checked and rechecked, but all my drivers and BIOS updates are fresh.

Look in Task Manager, Details tab, and sort by CPU to see which processes are causing the CPU activity.

Do you see a clear culprit? I don't know what some of these are.

I think nobody knows what they all are.  Runtime broker is a core windows process and cannot be disabled.  Here is a description of a couple of ways to deal with problems.

Good thought regarding runtime broker, but I turned off all notifications on the worst behaving ThinkPad quite a while ago :/

FWIW, I've seen high CPU use by runtime broker due to the Windows Photos app processing photos somehow (maybe scanning for faces or looking for text in photos?) and with Groove indexing a large music collection. In both those cases eventually the activity stopped, but I think it took days, not hours.

Interesting--how did you know it was Photos and Groove using runtime broker? I'm having trouble figuring out all the connections.
