ThinkPad x121e Fan Control issues

2011-09-06, 12:14 PM

I recently bought on of these (it's a 3045 - 6UG) and  I've noticed that it is getting extremely hot. I know that when I first got it this was not the case but now it appears the CPU fan is not automatically starting when the CPU gets hot. I recorded temperatures of 74c (164f) at idle!

I did a quich search after this and found a program called TPFan controller just to test if the fan was broken or not and if I set this to manual the fan does in fact work. At fan level 1 (max is 7) it brings the idle temp down to 40c. This proves that the fan is not at fault but instead that it's either a BIOS or driver issue.

I could probably live with just using TPFan Controler but really I'd like to get my new laptop working as it should.

Does anyone now of a solution to this issue? Your help would be much appreciated. If you require anymore details please ask.

Well, my X120e idles around 60 with the fan on low, but that isn't representative of what you have. As is, it sounds like the BIOS/fan driver hasn't been calibrated or optimized for the X121 yet. So long as you don't hit some absurd temp, you can wait for an update that relates directly to the fan control.

This helped me too

My desktop gets up to 60 sometimes and I know it's safe for a cpu to get up to 100 (depending on the thermal envelop) but with this laptop at 70 it really burns your legs. I'm going to take your advice and try to upgrade the BIOS (I hope there is an easy tool for this) if there is an upgrade and i'll get back to the community if I find that helps.

I was on the verge of sending it back to Lenovo to have them fix it when I decided to give the BIOS flash utility a go. Hey presto the fan is now working under it's on volition as it should do.

Fingers cross it doesn't simply stop working again.
