ThinkPad x220 powering up failure

2014-12-11, 23:14 PM

After 3 year of use, and recent warranty expiration, my x220 went directly to black screen.

The system wouldn't turn on. After battery out, and power button reset, the system has ocasionally boot up to windows welcome page, but then goes directly to black screen. In other ocassions, it starts normally and keeps working for days, but then the failure comes back again, direclty to black screen.

Currently, when traying to turn it on after battery-power button reset, inmediatly after ac adapter is plugged in, it turns on briefly leds for speaker, mic buttons and HD and bluetooth indicators, auxiliary keyboard lamp turns on, green led of power button and screen turns on, to inmediatly go back to black with out any othe response. In some ocassions, the former beheavir its repeated by itself another time.

Any ideas?

Update on current behaviour:

Machine was left with battery and AC plugged in. It went by itself through various turn on cycles, reaching always at the same point as in my previous post. After a while, now the machine has stop, with green led in power button and bluetooth indicator.

Hi berrecalde,

This message might be too late for you, but did you try to hook up external monitor?

My x220 is having similar behavior, but with external monitor, it is working fine.

LCD screen might be forgotten during sytsem boot...

Try to boot up the system with external monitor. It may give you some hints

for your recovery process.

In my case, I am certain that the problem is in BIOS or embedded processor software,

I will be reflashing my x220 when I am ready. (not tried yet)

Thanks,

Try re-seating the RAM sticks, making sure the contact edge is clean, then reseat them while ensuring that they have clicked intoi the spring retainers.

The RAM sticks are accessible through a removeable panel on the bottom of your X220.
