How did you find out it was a software problem?

Re:Thinkpad Extreme X1 second generation camera suddenly in black and white

The solution that worked for my Lenovo laptop black and white webcam issue on all apps was one that was suggested on a Microsoft forum about going into Skype (I used the preinstalled Skype for Personal Use) and during the setup, I went to:

Skype > Sign in > Webcam Settings > [Under Video Proc Amp tab] ensure ColorEnable is checkmarked > Click OK

My webcam was suddenly in color in all of my other apps including Zoom, Lenovo Vantage, and Camera App.

Unsure as to why this worked, but I will stop questioning it. For reference, I did use some some open source webcam solutions like OBS and a test-taking browser called Lockdown Browser which may have changed my settings with no way to change them back.

Here is the sequence of events:

  1. During an exam with Lockdown Browser, camera went black and white
  2. Zoom meetings, Camera App, Lenovo Vantage, and all other apps the integrated webcam showed as black and white only
  3. Attempted to update webcam drivers and got up to date - No solution
  4. Disabled and enabled integrated webcam on Device Manager - No solution
  5. Updated all Windows Updates - No solution
  6. Uninstalled Lockdown Browser and OBS - No solution
  7. Heard about infrared feature, and light sensors feature so I turned on all the lights and moved near a window - No solution
  8. Searched forums until I found an obscure one on the Microsoft page about going on Skype to edit settings but dismissed it
  9. Finally caved and opened up Skype, tried steps above, and the webcam was in color everywhere

Thank you so much for this workaround fix. I’ve been trying to figure this out for months. I’ve called in to Lenovo and have updated drivers, rolled back drivers and nothing!

The Skype thing worked! So weird.

Thank you!

I suspect you can fix it more directly in Lenovo Vantage:

LV / Hardware settings / Audio-Visual / (scroll to bottom) / Click to access Camera properties window / check ColorEnable

Couple dozen camera setting also available there.

This is what I get, absolutely not all those settings.
I do have the B&W problem but I cannot fix it with skype, I wanted to try this way but I don't have these settings

Yes, and if I scroll down past all those, way to the very bottom, past unrelated settings for sound devices, I finally see

More

Click here to access the Camera properties window

Click that if you can find it. (On my X1EG2, that window does not always open on top so you may need to look for it on the taskbar after it opens.)
